What the reference sheet gives you — and what it does not
The Digital SAT prints a formula sheet at the start of each Math module. It contains the area of a circle, the circumference, the Pythagorean theorem, the special-triangle ratios, and these volumes: \[ V_{\text{prism}}=\ell wh,\quad V_{\text{cylinder}}=\pi r^2h,\quad V_{\text{sphere}}=\tfrac43\pi r^3,\quad V_{\text{cone}}=\tfrac13\pi r^2h,\quad V_{\text{pyramid}}=\tfrac13\ell wh . \]
- Surface area of a sphere: $4\pi r^2$.
- Surface area of a cylinder: $2\pi r^2+2\pi rh$ (two discs plus the rolled-out rectangle).
- Surface area of a rectangular prism: $2(\ell w+\ell h+wh)$; of a cube, $6s^2$.
- Any prism or cylinder: $V=(\text{area of base})\times(\text{height})$.
- Space diagonal of a rectangular box: $\sqrt{\ell^2+w^2+h^2}$ (Pythagoras applied twice).
Solving backwards for a length
A right circular cylinder has volume $200\pi$ and height $8$. Find its radius, then its lateral surface area.
$\pi r^2(8)=200\pi$ gives $r^2=25$ and $r=5$. The lateral surface (the curved part only) is $2\pi rh=2\pi(5)(8)=\boxed{80\pi}$.
A sphere has volume $36\pi$. What is its surface area?
$\tfrac43\pi r^3=36\pi$ gives $r^3=27$ and $r=3$. Then $4\pi r^2=4\pi(9)=\boxed{36\pi}$.
The two numbers coming out equal is a coincidence of $r=3$, not a rule.
A cube has surface area $150$. What is its volume?
$6s^2=150$ gives $s^2=25$ and $s=5$, so $V=5^3=\boxed{125}$.
Composite and hollow solids
Add or subtract whole volumes; do not try to build a single formula.
A cylindrical pipe is $10$ inches long. Its outer radius is $6$ and its inner radius is $4$. What is the volume of the metal in the pipe?
Outer cylinder minus inner cylinder: \[ \pi(6)^2(10)-\pi(4)^2(10)=360\pi-160\pi=\boxed{200\pi}\ \text{cubic inches}. \]
A right circular cone and a right circular cylinder have the same radius and the same height. The cylinder's volume is $60$ cubic inches greater than the cone's. Find the cylinder's volume.
Let the cylinder's volume be $V$. Since $V_{\text{cone}}=\tfrac13\pi r^2h=\tfrac13V$, \[ V-\tfrac13V=\tfrac23V=60 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad V=\boxed{90}\ \text{cubic inches}. \] Neither $r$ nor $h$ is ever needed.
Nhớ quan hệ “một phần ba”: nón so với trụ cùng đáy cùng chiều cao, chóp so với lăng trụ cùng đáy cùng chiều cao — luôn là $\tfrac13$. Rất nhiều câu khó chỉ là câu đại số về tỉ lệ này, và nếu bạn đặt ẩn cho thể tích thay vì cho $r$ và $h$ thì bài giải rút gọn từ năm dòng xuống hai dòng.
Similar solids: $k$, $k^2$, $k^3$
If every linear dimension of a solid is multiplied by $k$, then \[ \text{lengths}\times k,\qquad \text{areas (including surface area)}\times k^2,\qquad \text{volumes}\times k^3 . \] Read it in reverse too: a volume ratio of $27:1$ means a linear ratio of $3:1$ and a surface area ratio of $9:1$.
Two right circular cylinders are similar and the larger has $2$ times the radius of the smaller. If the smaller has volume $15\pi$, what is the volume of the larger?
Similar means every dimension scales by $k=2$, so the volume scales by $2^3=8$: $15\pi\times8=\boxed{120\pi}$. (Multiplying by $2$, or by $4$, are the two distractors such a question is built around.)
A solid metal sphere of radius $10$ is melted and recast into $8$ identical smaller spheres. What is the radius of each small sphere?
Each small sphere has $\tfrac18$ of the volume, so the linear scale factor is $\sqrt[3]{\tfrac18}=\tfrac12$ and the radius is $10\cdot\tfrac12=\boxed{5}$.
Tăng cạnh $10\%$ không làm thể tích tăng $10\%$, cũng không phải $30\%$. Hệ số là $1{,}1^3=1{,}331$, tức tăng $33{,}1\%$. Luôn luỹ thừa hệ số tỉ lệ, đừng luỹ thừa phần trăm.
Units, rates and filling
$1$ ft $=12$ in, so $1$ ft$^2=144$ in$^2$ and $1$ ft$^3=1728$ in$^3$. Similarly $1$ m$^3=1\,000\,000$ cm$^3$. A conversion factor for length gets squared for areas and cubed for volumes.
A rectangular tank measures $3$ ft by $4$ ft by $2$ ft and is filled with water at a rate of $6$ cubic feet per minute. How long does filling it take?
$V=3\cdot4\cdot2=24$ cubic feet, so the time is $\dfrac{24}{6}=\boxed{4\text{ minutes}}$.
A cylindrical container of radius $2$ inches holds water to a height of $9$ inches. All of it is poured into a second cylindrical container of radius $6$ inches. How high does the water stand in the second container?
The volume is unchanged: $\pi(2)^2(9)=36\pi$. In the new container $\pi(6)^2h=36\pi$, so $36h=36$ and $h=\boxed{1}$ inch. Tripling the radius divides the depth by nine, not by three.
Volume as a middle step: cost, capacity and density
Word problems rarely stop at the volume. They multiply it by a price, a density, or a rate — so the volume is the middle step, not the answer.
$1$ litre $=1000$ cm$^3$, and $1$ m$^3=1000$ litres. Density is mass per unit volume, so mass $=$ density $\times$ volume; cost problems work the same way with price per unit volume.
A rectangular concrete slab measures $12$ ft by $9$ ft by $0.5$ ft. Concrete costs $$6$ per cubic foot. What does the slab cost?
$V=12\cdot9\cdot0.5=54$ cubic feet, so the cost is $54\times6=\boxed{\$324}$.
A rectangular fish tank measures $40$ cm by $25$ cm by $30$ cm. How many litres of water does it hold when full?
$V=40\cdot25\cdot30=30\,000$ cm$^3$. Since $1$ litre $=1000$ cm$^3$, the tank holds $\dfrac{30\,000}{1000}=\boxed{30}$ litres.
