The shape of the section
The Math section is delivered in two modules. Each module holds $22$ questions and runs for $35$ minutes, so the section is $44$ questions in $70$ minutes.
Math: $2\times 22$ questions, $2\times 35$ minutes.
Reading and Writing: $2\times 27$ questions, $2\times 32$ minutes.
Total testing time $64+70=134$ minutes, plus a $10$-minute break between the two sections.
Each section is reported on a $200$–$800$ scale; the total runs $400$–$1600$.
Of the $22$ questions in a Math module, two are pretest questions that do not affect the score. Four of the $44$ Math questions you answer are therefore invisible to your score, and nothing on screen marks them.
$44$ questions delivered $\;\longrightarrow\;$ $40$ scored. Across those $40$: Algebra $13$–$15$, Advanced Math $13$–$15$, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis $5$–$7$, Geometry and Trigonometry $5$–$7$. About $75\%$ are multiple choice ($33$ of $44$) and about $25\%$ are student-produced response ($11$ of $44$).
Order inside a module
Within a module the multiple-choice questions come first, ordered roughly from easier to harder. The student-produced response questions form a block at the end — and that block restarts at an easier level.
A student works strictly front to back and runs out of time after question $18$ of $22$. Questions $19$–$22$ are the student-produced response block.
The four questions never seen are not the four hardest in the module: the difficulty curve reset at question $18$ or so. The student lost points that were easier than the ones fought for at questions $15$–$17$. Reaching the end of the module beats polishing the middle.
Coi thứ tự câu là thứ tự độ khó cho cả module. Sai — độ khó tăng dần trong khối trắc nghiệm, rồi tụt xuống ở câu đầu tiên của khối tự điền. Ai làm tuần tự và hết giờ ở câu $18$ đã bỏ mất đúng những câu dễ nhất của nửa sau.
How the routing works
Performance on Module 1 decides which of two forms of Module 2 you receive: a lower-difficulty form or a higher-difficulty form. Routing is done per section and uses only that section's Module 1.
- Module 1 is worth more than its $20$ scored questions, because it also sets the ceiling.
- Two students with the same number of correct answers do not get the same score if they sat different forms of Module 2 — difficulty is part of the scoring model.
- Time left over at the end of Module 1 is gone. It does not roll into Module 2, and it does not lengthen the break.
Two students each finish the section with $34$ of the $40$ scored questions correct. Student A was routed to the higher-difficulty Module 2; student B to the lower-difficulty one.
Student A's $34$ include harder items, so A's reported Math score is higher. The number of ticks is not the score — the difficulty of what was ticked is part of it. This is why a sloppy Module 1 is expensive twice over.
The clock
Average pace is $2100/22 \approx 95$ seconds per question. Nobody spends $95$ seconds on every question; the number is a budget, not a target.
A student wants $6$ minutes of review time at the end of each module. What is the average first-pass allowance per question?
$35-6=29$ minutes $=1740$ seconds, over $22$ questions: $1740/22 = 79.09\ldots$, so about $\boxed{79\text{ seconds}}$ per question on the first pass.
A student spends $1$ minute $50$ seconds on each of the first $12$ questions of a module. How much time remains, on average, for each of the other $10$?
$12\times 110 = 1320$ seconds used; $2100-1320=780$ seconds left; $780/10 = \boxed{78\text{ seconds}}$ each. Still workable — but only if the student notices now rather than at question $18$.
A module has $17$ multiple-choice and $5$ student-produced response questions. A student wants each student-produced response question to get exactly twice the time of a multiple-choice question. What is the multiple-choice allowance, to the nearest second?
$17t+5(2t)=2100 \Rightarrow 27t=2100 \Rightarrow t=77.7\ldots$, so $\boxed{t\approx 78\text{ seconds}}$ and each written-answer question gets about $156$ seconds.
The two-glance rule. Look at the timer exactly twice per module: at question $11$ (should read $\geq 17$ minutes) and at question $18$ (should read $\geq 6$ minutes). Any other glance costs attention and buys nothing.
Tools, marks and blanks
Every Math question has the built-in graphing calculator and the reference sheet available. Any question can be marked for review and revisited inside its own module; once a module is submitted it is closed for good.
There is no penalty for a wrong answer. A blank multiple-choice question scores $0$; a random guess scores $0.25$ in expectation.
Forty seconds remain and five multiple-choice questions are blank. Guessing on all five gives an expected $5\times\tfrac14 = \boxed{1.25}$ additional correct answers; leaving them blank gives $0$. Filling five bubbles takes about ten seconds.
$300$ seconds remain. Two questions are blank; each needs about $100$ seconds and would then be correct with probability $0.7$, versus $0.25$ if guessed. Six answered questions are marked for review; each recheck takes $50$ seconds and adds an expected $0.15$ correct answers.
Recheck all six: $6(0.15)=0.90$.
Answer both blanks, then recheck two: $2(0.7-0.25)+2(0.15)=0.90+0.30=\boxed{1.20}$.
Answer one blank, then recheck four: $0.45+0.60=1.05$.
Blanks first, always. A blank is the only place where a fixed amount of work buys a jump from $0.25$ to $0.7$.
Ba việc bắt buộc làm trước khi bấm nộp mỗi module: (1) cuộn nhanh kiểm tra không còn ô trống — kể cả câu tự điền; (2) mở lại các câu đã đánh dấu theo thứ tự câu gần cuối trước, vì đó là chỗ bạn vội nhất; (3) đọc lại đề của câu vừa sửa, đừng đọc lại lời giải của mình — lỗi hay gặp nhất không phải tính sai mà là trả lời nhầm đại lượng.
What the reference sheet gives you — and what it does not
A reference sheet is available on every Math question. Knowing its contents by heart matters less than knowing its gaps, because the gaps are what must be memorised.
Provided: area and circumference of a circle; area of a rectangle and of a triangle; the Pythagorean theorem; the $30^\circ$–$60^\circ$–$90^\circ$ and $45^\circ$–$45^\circ$–$90^\circ$ side ratios; volumes of a rectangular solid, cylinder, sphere, cone and pyramid; $360^\circ$ and $2\pi$ radians in a circle; $180^\circ$ in a triangle.
Not provided: the quadratic formula; slope, distance and midpoint formulas; vertex form; the sine, cosine and tangent ratios; exponential growth and compound-interest forms; laws of sines and cosines; anything about mean, median or standard deviation.
A right circular cone has radius $3$ and height $10$. What is its volume?
The sheet supplies $V=\tfrac13\pi r^2 h$. Then $V=\tfrac13\pi(3)^2(10)=\boxed{30\pi}\approx 94.25$. Nothing here needs to be memorised — which is precisely why time spent memorising it is time stolen from the quadratic formula.
