Two units for the same angle
An angle can be measured in degrees (a full turn is $360^\circ$) or in radians (a full turn is $2\pi$). Everything follows from one equality.
\[ 180^\circ=\pi\ \text{radians} \qquad\Longrightarrow\qquad \text{radians}=\text{degrees}\times\frac{\pi}{180}, \qquad \text{degrees}=\text{radians}\times\frac{180}{\pi}. \]
Convert $216^\circ$ to radians, and $\tfrac{5\pi}{12}$ radians to degrees.
$216\times\dfrac{\pi}{180}=\dfrac{216\pi}{180}=\boxed{\dfrac{6\pi}{5}}$.
$\dfrac{5\pi}{12}\times\dfrac{180}{\pi}=\dfrac{5\cdot180}{12}=\boxed{75^\circ}$.
What a radian actually is
An angle of $\theta$ radians at the centre of a circle of radius $r$ cuts off an arc of length \[ s=r\theta \qquad\Longleftrightarrow\qquad \theta=\frac{s}{r}. \] So a radian is a pure ratio: arc length divided by radius. That is why $s=r\theta$ has no conversion factor in it — and why the same formula is wrong by a factor of $\tfrac{\pi}{180}$ if $\theta$ is in degrees.
Everything about a sector comes from the fraction of the circle it occupies, $\dfrac{\theta}{2\pi}$ in radians or $\dfrac{\theta}{360}$ in degrees: \[ s=\frac{\theta}{360}\cdot 2\pi r=r\theta_{\text{rad}},\qquad A_{\text{sector}}=\frac{\theta}{360}\cdot \pi r^2=\tfrac12 r^2\theta_{\text{rad}} =\tfrac12 r s . \]
A circle has radius $12$. A central angle of $45^\circ$ cuts off a sector. Find the arc length and the sector area.
The fraction is $\dfrac{45}{360}=\dfrac18$.
Arc: $\dfrac18\cdot 2\pi(12)=\dfrac18\cdot 24\pi=\boxed{3\pi}$.
Area: $\dfrac18\cdot\pi(12)^2=\dfrac18\cdot144\pi=\boxed{18\pi}$.
An arc of length $12$ is cut off by a central angle in a circle of radius $8$. Find the angle in radians and the area of the sector.
$\theta=\dfrac{s}{r}=\dfrac{12}{8}=1.5$ radians.
Area $=\tfrac12 r s=\tfrac12(8)(12)=\boxed{48}$. (Or $\tfrac12 r^2\theta=\tfrac12(64)(1.5)=48$.)
A sector of a circle of radius $10$ has area $30\pi$. What is its central angle, in degrees?
The whole circle has area $100\pi$, so the sector is $\dfrac{30\pi}{100\pi}=0.3$ of it. Hence $\theta=0.3\times360=\boxed{108^\circ}$.
Central angles versus inscribed angles
If a central angle and an inscribed angle intercept the same arc, the inscribed angle is half the central angle: \[ \angle ACB=\tfrac12\,\angle AOB \qquad (O \text{ the centre}, \ C \text{ on the circle}). \] Two consequences worth memorising: an angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle, and all inscribed angles standing on the same arc are equal.
In a circle of radius $18$ with centre $O$, points $A$, $B$, $C$ lie on the circle and $\angle ABC=25^\circ$. What is the length of arc $AC$ that does not contain $B$?
The inscribed angle at $B$ intercepts arc $AC$, so the central angle is $\angle AOC=2(25^\circ)=50^\circ$. Then \[ \text{arc}=\frac{50}{360}\cdot2\pi(18)=\frac{5}{36}\cdot36\pi=\boxed{5\pi} . \]
Chords are not arcs
A chord is the straight segment joining two points of the circle; the arc is the curved path between them. They are never equal, and the SAT builds distractors out of confusing the two.
Circle $O$ has radius $8$, and the chord $\overline{AB}$ also has length $8$. What is the length of minor arc $AB$?
$OA=OB=AB=8$, so triangle $AOB$ is equilateral and the central angle is $60^\circ=\tfrac{\pi}{3}$. The arc is \[ s=r\theta=8\cdot\frac{\pi}{3}=\boxed{\frac{8\pi}{3}}\approx8.38 , \] slightly longer than the chord, as it must be.
Circle $O$ has radius $4$ and $\angle AOB=90^\circ$. Find the area of the region bounded by chord $\overline{AB}$ and minor arc $AB$.
Sector area: $\dfrac{90}{360}\cdot\pi(16)=4\pi$.
Triangle $AOB$: the two radii are perpendicular, so they are the legs and the area is $\tfrac12(4)(4)=8$.
The region asked for is the sector minus the triangle: $\boxed{4\pi-8}$. It is positive because $4\pi\approx12.6$.
Minor arc, major arc, and the leftover sector
Two points on a circle cut it into two arcs whose degree measures add to $360$, and into two sectors whose areas add to $\pi r^2$. Many questions give you one piece and ask for the other.
In a circle of radius $9$, minor arc $AB$ measures $140^\circ$. What is the length of major arc $AB$?
The major arc measures $360-140=220^\circ$, so its length is \[ \frac{220}{360}\cdot 2\pi(9)=\frac{11}{18}\cdot18\pi=\boxed{11\pi}. \]
A sector of a circle has an arc equal to $\tfrac15$ of the circumference. The other sector, the one left over, has area $40\pi$. Find the radius.
The leftover sector is $1-\tfrac15=\tfrac45$ of the circle, so $\tfrac45\pi r^2=40\pi$, giving $\pi r^2=50\pi$, hence $r^2=50$ and $r=\boxed{5\sqrt2}$.
Cụm “the remaining sector” hay “the shaded region” gần như luôn có nghĩa là phần bù. Đừng tính phần được nhắc tới rồi khoanh — đọc lại xem đề hỏi phần nào. Một dòng ghi ra $\theta_{\text{lớn}}=360-\theta_{\text{nhỏ}}$ ngay từ đầu tiết kiệm được cả câu.
Scaling and proportional reasoning
Keep the central angle fixed and scale the radius by $k$: arc length scales by $k$, sector area scales by $k^2$. Keep the radius fixed and scale the angle by $k$: both scale by $k$.
Câu hỏi kiểu “bán kính gấp ba, góc giữ nguyên thì diện tích quạt thay đổi thế nào” không cần con số nào. Viết thẳng $A=\tfrac12r^2\theta$ rồi thay $r\to3r$: $\tfrac12(3r)^2\theta=9\cdot\tfrac12r^2\theta$.
