What forces similarity
If two angles of one triangle equal two angles of another, the triangles are similar. The third pair matches automatically, since all three sum to $180^\circ$.
Two angle pairs appear over and over without being stated: shared angles (two triangles sitting inside one figure and meeting at a common vertex) and vertical angles (two triangles on opposite sides of a crossing point). Neither is written in the question — both must be read off the figure.
Writing $\triangle ABC\sim\triangle DEF$ is a statement about order: $A$ matches $D$, $B$ matches $E$, $C$ matches $F$. So $AB$ matches $DE$, $BC$ matches $EF$, $AC$ matches $DF$. Reading the letters off in the wrong order is the single most common way to lose this question.
$\triangle ABC\sim\triangle DEF$ with $AB=10$, $BC=14$ and $DE=15$. Find $EF$.
$AB$ and $DE$ correspond, so the scale factor from $ABC$ to $DEF$ is $k=\tfrac{15}{10}=\tfrac32$. Then $EF=k\cdot BC=\tfrac32\cdot 14=\boxed{21}$.
Two safe ways to write the ratio
Across triangles: $\dfrac{\text{side of small}}{\text{matching side of big}}$ equals
the same fraction for every matching pair.
Within one triangle: $\dfrac{\text{side }1\text{ of small}}{\text{side }2\text{ of small}}
=\dfrac{\text{matching side }1\text{ of big}}{\text{matching side }2\text{ of big}}$.
Both are correct. What is fatal is mixing them inside one equation — numerator from the across form, denominator from the within form.
A $4$-foot post casts a $6$-foot shadow at the same moment a tree casts a $27$-foot shadow. How tall is the tree?
Same sun angle and both objects vertical, so the two right triangles are similar. Within-triangle form: $\dfrac{\text{height}}{\text{shadow}}$ is the same for both, so $\dfrac{4}{6}=\dfrac{h}{27}$, giving $h=27\cdot\tfrac46=\boxed{18\text{ feet}}$.
The two parallel configurations
Left (side-splitter). If $DE\parallel BC$ then $\triangle ADE\sim\triangle ABC$, and
$\dfrac{AD}{DB}=\dfrac{AE}{EC}$. Careful: the similarity ratio uses the whole sides
$\dfrac{AD}{AB}$, while the split ratio uses the pieces $\dfrac{AD}{DB}$. They are
different numbers.
Right (bowtie). If $AB\parallel DC$ then $\triangle EAB\sim\triangle ECD$ by
alternate interior angles plus vertical angles at $E$. Note the order: $A$ matches $C$ and
$B$ matches $D$, because $A$ and $C$ are the two ends of the same segment through $E$.
Hence
$\dfrac{AB}{CD}=\dfrac{EA}{EC}=\dfrac{EB}{ED}$ — each ratio pairs two pieces of one
segment, never a piece of $AC$ with a piece of $BD$.
In triangle $ABC$, $D$ is on $AB$ and $E$ is on $AC$ with $DE\parallel BC$. If $AD=6$, $DB=9$ and $AE=8$, find $EC$.
$\dfrac{AD}{DB}=\dfrac{AE}{EC}$ gives $\dfrac69=\dfrac8{EC}$, so $6\,EC=72$ and $EC=\boxed{12}$. (As a check, $\dfrac{AD}{AB}=\dfrac{6}{15}=0.4$ and $\dfrac{AE}{AC}=\dfrac{8}{20}=0.4$.)
Segments $AC$ and $BD$ intersect at $E$, with $AB\parallel DC$. If $AB=10$, $DC=15$ and $AE=8$, find $EC$.
$\triangle EAB\sim\triangle ECD$, so $\dfrac{AB}{DC}=\dfrac{EA}{EC}$, that is $\dfrac{10}{15}=\dfrac{8}{EC}$. Then $10\,EC=120$ and $EC=\boxed{12}$.
The altitude to the hypotenuse
Drop the altitude from the right angle onto the hypotenuse. The original triangle and the two pieces are all similar to one another. Three length relations fall out.
With the right angle at $C$ and $CD\perp AB$: \[ CD^2=AD\cdot DB,\qquad AC^2=AD\cdot AB,\qquad BC^2=BD\cdot AB. \] Read them in words: the altitude is the geometric mean of the two hypotenuse pieces; each leg is the geometric mean of its own adjacent piece and the whole hypotenuse.
In right triangle $ABC$ the right angle is at $C$, and the altitude $CD$ meets hypotenuse $AB$ with $AD=9$ and $DB=16$. Find $CD$, $AC$ and $BC$.
$CD^2=9\cdot16=144$, so $CD=12$. The hypotenuse is $AB=25$, so $AC^2=9\cdot25=225$ giving $AC=15$, and $BC^2=16\cdot25=400$ giving $BC=20$. Check: $225+400=625=25^2$. Answer: $\boxed{CD=12,\;AC=15,\;BC=20}$.
One dimension, two dimensions, three dimensions
If two figures are similar with side ratio $k$, then \[\frac{\text{perimeter of large}}{\text{perimeter of small}}=k,\qquad \frac{\text{area of large}}{\text{area of small}}=k^2,\qquad \frac{\text{volume of large}}{\text{volume of small}}=k^3 .\] Anything measured in one length unit (perimeter, radius, height, slant height) scales by $k$; anything in square units (area, surface area) by $k^2$; anything in cubic units (volume, capacity, weight of a solid object) by $k^3$.
Two similar triangles have areas $45$ and $80$. The shortest side of the smaller one is $9$. Find the shortest side of the larger one.
The area ratio is $\dfrac{80}{45}=\dfrac{16}{9}$, so the side ratio is $k=\sqrt{\tfrac{16}{9}}=\tfrac43$. The shortest sides correspond, so the answer is $9\cdot\tfrac43=\boxed{12}$.
In triangle $ABC$, $D$ lies on $AB$ and $E$ lies on $AC$ with $DE\parallel BC$ and $\dfrac{AD}{AB}=\dfrac23$. If the area of triangle $ADE$ is $24$, find the area of quadrilateral $DBCE$.
$\triangle ADE\sim\triangle ABC$ with $k=\tfrac23$, so $[ADE]=\left(\tfrac23\right)^2[ABC]=\tfrac49[ABC]$. Then $[ABC]=24\cdot\tfrac94=54$, and the quadrilateral is the leftover: $54-24=\boxed{30}$.
A cone-shaped cup is filled with water to half its height. What fraction of the cup's volume is filled?
The water forms a cone similar to the whole cup with $k=\tfrac12$, so the volume ratio is $k^3=\left(\tfrac12\right)^3=\boxed{\dfrac{1}{8}}$ — far less than half.
