Three ratios, one reference angle
Fix an acute angle in a right triangle. Every side then has a name relative to that angle: the side across from it is the opposite, the leg touching it is the adjacent, and the side across from the right angle is the hypotenuse.
\[ \sin A=\frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{hypotenuse}},\qquad \cos A=\frac{\text{adjacent}}{\text{hypotenuse}},\qquad \tan A=\frac{\text{opposite}}{\text{adjacent}}=\frac{\sin A}{\cos A}. \] The names are attached to the angle, not to the letters of the triangle. Move to the other acute angle and “opposite” and “adjacent” swap places.
Four Pythagorean triples pay for themselves on test day: $3\text{--}4\text{--}5$, $5\text{--}12\text{--}13$, $8\text{--}15\text{--}17$, $7\text{--}24\text{--}25$, together with all their multiples ($6\text{--}8\text{--}10$, $9\text{--}12\text{--}15$, $15\text{--}36\text{--}39$, …).
In triangle $ABC$, angle $C=90^\circ$, $AC=8$ and $BC=15$. Find $\sin A$, $\cos A$ and $\tan A$.
The hypotenuse is $AB=\sqrt{8^2+15^2}=\sqrt{289}=17$. Now read the sides from the point of view of $A$: opposite $=BC=15$, adjacent $=AC=8$, hypotenuse $=17$. Hence \[ \sin A=\tfrac{15}{17},\qquad \cos A=\tfrac{8}{17},\qquad \tan A=\tfrac{15}{8}. \]
Going backwards from a ratio
The SAT rarely hands you all three sides. It hands you one ratio and one length. Because a ratio only fixes the shape, write the two relevant sides as $3k$ and $4k$ (or whatever the ratio says), then use the given length to pin down $k$.
In right triangle $ABC$ the right angle is at $C$, $\tan A=\tfrac{3}{4}$, and $AB=20$. Find $BC$ and $AC$.
$\tan A=\dfrac{BC}{AC}=\dfrac34$, so write $BC=3k$ and $AC=4k$. Then the hypotenuse is $AB=5k$ (a $3\text{--}4\text{--}5$ triangle), and $5k=20$ gives $k=4$. Therefore $BC=12$ and $AC=16$.
In right triangle $ABC$ the right angle is at $B$. The area of the triangle is $54$ and $AB=9$. What is $\tan A$?
The two legs are $AB$ and $BC$, so $\tfrac12(9)(BC)=54$ gives $BC=12$. From $A$, the opposite leg is $BC=12$ and the adjacent leg is $AB=9$, so $\tan A=\dfrac{12}{9}=\boxed{\dfrac43}$.
An acute angle $x$ satisfies $\sin x=\tfrac{3}{4}$. What is $\tan x$?
Build a triangle: opposite $=3$, hypotenuse $=4$, so the adjacent leg is $\sqrt{16-9}=\sqrt7$. Then $\tan x=\dfrac{3}{\sqrt7}=\dfrac{3\sqrt7}{7}$.
Complementary angles — the identity the SAT loves
In a right triangle the two acute angles add to $90^\circ$. Whatever is “opposite” for one of them is “adjacent” for the other, which forces a single identity.
Reading the picture: $\sin x=\tfrac ac$ and $\cos(90^\circ-x)=\tfrac ac$ as well.
\[ \sin x=\cos(90^\circ-x),\qquad \cos x=\sin(90^\circ-x),\qquad \tan x=\frac{1}{\tan(90^\circ-x)} . \] So if $\sin(\text{angle }P)=\cos(\text{angle }Q)$ and both angles are acute, then $P+Q=90^\circ$ — add the expressions, never set them equal.
If $\sin(3x)^\circ=\cos(x+10)^\circ$ and both angles are acute, what is $x$?
The angles must be complementary: $3x+(x+10)=90$, so $4x=80$ and $\boxed{x=20}$.
In right triangle $ABC$ the right angle is at $C$ and $\sin A=0.28$. What is $\cos B$?
Angles $A$ and $B$ are complementary, so $B=90^\circ-A$ and $\cos B=\cos(90^\circ-A)=\sin A=\boxed{0.28}$. No side lengths are needed at all.
Similar right triangles: the ratio ignores size
Two right triangles with one pair of equal acute angles are similar, so all corresponding side ratios agree. That is exactly why sine, cosine and tangent are functions of the angle alone.
If two right triangles share an acute angle measure, then their sines, cosines and tangents at that angle are identical — no matter how different the two triangles look. A length given for the second triangle is often a distractor.
Triangle $ABC$ has a right angle at $B$, with $AB=7$ and $BC=24$. Triangle $DEF$ is similar to triangle $ABC$, with the right angle at $E$ and $DE=35$. What is $\sin D$?
In triangle $ABC$, $AC=\sqrt{49+576}=25$, so $\sin A=\dfrac{BC}{AC}=\dfrac{24}{25}$. Vertex $D$ corresponds to vertex $A$, so $\sin D=\sin A=\boxed{\tfrac{24}{25}}$. The number $35$ never enters the computation.
Special triangles and the “not to scale” warning
Two shapes appear often enough to memorise, because they let you read exact values with no calculator work.
$\sin30^\circ=\tfrac12$, $\cos30^\circ=\tfrac{\sqrt3}{2}$, $\tan30^\circ=\tfrac{\sqrt3}{3}$; $\sin45^\circ=\cos45^\circ=\tfrac{\sqrt2}{2}$, $\tan45^\circ=1$; $\sin60^\circ=\tfrac{\sqrt3}{2}$, $\cos60^\circ=\tfrac12$, $\tan60^\circ=\sqrt3$.
A $26$-foot ladder leans against a vertical wall. The angle $\theta$ the ladder makes with the level ground satisfies $\tan\theta=\tfrac{12}{5}$. How far is the foot of the ladder from the wall?
Height and base are in ratio $12:5$, so write them as $12k$ and $5k$; the ladder is the hypotenuse, $13k$. From $13k=26$ we get $k=2$, so the base distance is $5(2)=\boxed{10\text{ feet}}$.
Now the warning. Every SAT geometry figure carries the note Figure not drawn to scale whenever the drawing would be misleading, and the drawing is misleading far more often than students expect.
The two legs look almost equal, so the eye reports “about $45^\circ$” and “$\sin P\approx\cos P$”. The labels say otherwise: $PR=13$, and the two ratios come out as $\tfrac{12}{13}$ and $\tfrac{5}{13}$, which are nowhere near equal.
