Three readings of one ratio
The statement “the ratio of $A$ to $B$ is $3:5$” carries three usable facts at once, and choosing the wrong one is where the fast mistakes happen.
- Part to part: $\dfrac{A}{B}=\dfrac35$.
- Part to whole: the whole splits into $3+5=8$ equal parts, so $A=\tfrac38$ of the total and $B=\tfrac58$ of the total.
- Multiplier: $A=3k$ and $B=5k$ for one common positive number $k$.
The multiplier form is the one to write down whenever the problem later changes one of the quantities, because it keeps a single unknown in play.
A shipment contains blue and green marbles in the ratio $5:7$, and $216$ marbles in total. How many more green marbles than blue marbles are there?
Total parts: $5+7=12$, so one part is $216\div 12=18$ marbles. Blue $=5(18)=90$, green $=7(18)=126$. The difference is one part $\times\,(7-5)=2(18)=\boxed{36}$.
If $a:b=3:4$ and $b:c=6:11$, what is $a:c$?
The two ratios share $b$, but $b$ is written as $4$ in one and $6$ in the other. Rescale both so $b$ matches: $\operatorname{lcm}(4,6)=12$, so $a:b=9:12$ and $b:c=12:22$. Chaining, $a:b:c=9:12:22$, hence $\boxed{a:c=9:22}$.
Proportions: set them up so the units cancel
A proportion is any statement $\dfrac{p}{q}=\dfrac{r}{s}$. Cross-multiplying gives $ps=qr$. The safety rule is to write the units next to every number: if the fraction on the left has miles on top and hours on the bottom, the fraction on the right must too.
Direct proportion: $y=kx$, so doubling $x$ doubles $y$, and $\dfrac{y_1}{x_1}=\dfrac{y_2}{x_2}$. Inverse proportion: $xy=k$, so doubling $x$ halves $y$, and $x_1y_1=x_2y_2$.
Five identical pumps fill a reservoir in $6$ hours. Working at the same rate, how long would $3$ pumps take?
The total work is fixed: $5\times 6=30$ pump-hours. With $3$ pumps, $3t=30$, so $t=\boxed{10}$ hours.
Setting up $\dfrac{6}{5}=\dfrac{t}{3}$ instead treats the relationship as direct and gives $t=3.6$ hours — fewer pumps finishing faster, which cannot happen.
The factor-label method
To convert a quantity, multiply it by fractions that equal $1$, arranged so that every unwanted unit appears once on top and once on the bottom.
Convert $45$ miles per hour to feet per second. $(1\text{ mile}=5280\text{ feet})$
\[ \frac{45\ \text{mi}}{1\ \text{h}}\times\frac{5280\ \text{ft}}{1\ \text{mi}} \times\frac{1\ \text{h}}{3600\ \text{s}} =\frac{45\times 5280}{3600}\ \frac{\text{ft}}{\text{s}} =\frac{237600}{3600}=\boxed{66\ \text{ft/s}}. \] Miles cancel against miles, hours cancel against hours, and only feet over seconds survives. Note that the seconds conversion had to be written upside down because hours started in the denominator.
Đơn vị nằm ở mẫu thì phân số đổi phải lộn ngược. Ở ví dụ trên, viết $\times\,\tfrac{3600\ \text{s}}{1\ \text{h}}$ cho ra $237{,}600\times 3600$ — một con số khổng lồ mà vẫn có thể trùng với một phương án nhiễu. Cách chặn: gạch bỏ đơn vị trên giấy; nếu còn sót “h” ở tử thì phân số đã bị lật sai chiều.
Area and volume: the factor gets squared or cubed
Length conversions are the ones everybody memorises, and area conversions are the ones everybody gets wrong. If $1$ yard $=3$ feet, then a square one yard on a side is $3\times 3=9$ square feet, and a cube one yard on a side is $3^3=27$ cubic feet.
If $1$ unit $=c$ smaller units, then $1$ square unit $=c^{2}$ smaller square units and $1$ cubic unit $=c^{3}$ smaller cubic units.
A tile costs $8.10 per square foot. What is the cost per square yard?
$1$ square yard $=9$ square feet, so the cost is $8.10\times 9=\boxed{\$72.90}$ per square yard.
The tempting answer, $8.10\times 3=\$24.30$, uses the length factor instead of the area factor.
A metal has density $7.8$ grams per cubic centimetre. What is the mass, in kilograms, of a block whose volume is $0.0025$ cubic metres?
$1\ \text{m}=100\ \text{cm}$, so $1\ \text{m}^{3}=100^{3}=1{,}000{,}000\ \text{cm}^{3}$. Then $0.0025\ \text{m}^{3}=0.0025\times 10^{6}=2500\ \text{cm}^{3}$.
Mass $=2500\times 7.8=19{,}500$ grams $=\boxed{19.5\ \text{kg}}$.
Rates built on other rates
Many questions stack two or three rates: miles per gallon with dollars per gallon, items per minute with dollars per item, kilowatt-hours per hour with cents per kilowatt-hour. Handle them exactly like unit conversions — write each rate as a fraction and let the units cancel.
A printer produces $24$ pages per minute and runs $7$ hours a day. Paper is sold in packs of $500$ sheets at $6.25 per pack, and each page uses one sheet. What is the cost of the paper consumed in one day?
Pages per day: $24\times 60\times 7=10{,}080$.
Packs consumed: $10{,}080\div 500=20.16$.
Cost: $20.16\times 6.25=\boxed{\$126.00}$.
On a scale drawing, $1$ inch represents $12$ miles. A lake occupies $3.5$ square inches on the drawing. What is the actual area of the lake, in square miles?
$1$ square inch represents $12^{2}=144$ square miles, so the lake covers $3.5\times 144=\boxed{504}$ square miles.
Reading a rate in both directions
Every rate can be written two ways, and the two forms answer different questions. A car rated at $30$ miles per gallon also uses $\tfrac{1}{30}$ gallon per mile. Neither form is more correct; choosing the wrong one produces an answer that is off by a factor of $30^{2}$ and still looks like a plausible number.
Put the unit you want in the answer on top, then multiply by the rate written so the other unit cancels. \[ \underbrace{240\ \text{mi}}_{\text{given}}\times\frac{1\ \text{gal}}{30\ \text{mi}} =8\ \text{gal}, \qquad \underbrace{8\ \text{gal}}_{\text{given}}\times\frac{30\ \text{mi}}{1\ \text{gal}} =240\ \text{mi}. \] Same rate, flipped, because the question asked for a different unit.
A tap delivers $5$ litres every $40$ seconds. Either direction fills a $210$-litre tank: \[ \frac{5\ \text{L}}{40\ \text{s}}=0.125\ \text{L/s} \;\Rightarrow\; \frac{210}{0.125}=1680\ \text{s}, \qquad \frac{40\ \text{s}}{5\ \text{L}}=8\ \text{s/L} \;\Rightarrow\; 210\times 8=1680\ \text{s}, \] and $1680$ seconds is $28$ minutes. The second route avoids a decimal entirely, which is why writing the rate “seconds per litre” is often the faster choice on a no-calculator stretch.
Đề hỏi “how many gallons” thì gallon phải ở tử; đề hỏi “how many miles” thì mile phải ở tử. Viết ra rồi gạch đơn vị — nếu gạch xong còn đúng đơn vị đề hỏi thì phép tính chắc chắn đặt đúng, dù chưa bấm máy.
Comparing two offers stated in different units
A price comparison is a rate comparison, and the sizes are usually given in units that do not match on purpose.
$750$ mL for $6.30 is $\dfrac{6.30}{0.750}=\$8.40$ per litre. $1.2$ L for $9.60 is $\dfrac{9.60}{1.2}=\$8.00$ per litre. The larger container is cheaper by $0.40 per litre — not by the $3.30 that separates the two price tags.
