Why squaring invents solutions
Squaring is not a reversible step. The statement $a=b$ always implies $a^2=b^2$, but $a^2=b^2$ only gives back $a=\pm b$. So every time both sides are squared, the new equation carries the solutions of the original plus the solutions of the sign-flipped version.
$x=3$ has one solution. Square it: $x^2=9$ has two, $x=3$ and $x=-3$. The extra root was
manufactured by the squaring, not by the problem.
Since $\sqrt{\;\cdot\;}$ is never negative, $\sqrt{E}=R$ forces $R\geq0$ before anything else.
One radical: isolate, square, check
- Isolate the radical on one side, alone.
- Square both sides. The right side must be squared as a whole.
- Solve the resulting polynomial equation.
- Substitute every root back into the original equation and discard the failures.
Solve $\;\sqrt{2x+7}=x+2$.
Square: $2x+7=(x+2)^2=x^2+4x+4$, so $x^2+2x-3=0$ and $(x+3)(x-1)=0$.
Test $x=-3$: the left side is $\sqrt{1}=1$, the right side is $-1$. Rejected.
Test $x=1$: $\sqrt{9}=3$ and $1+2=3$. Accepted. The only solution is $\boxed{x=1}$.
Solve $\;\sqrt{x+5}-x=3$.
Isolate first: $\sqrt{x+5}=x+3$. Squaring before isolating would leave a radical behind.
Square: $x+5=x^2+6x+9$, so $x^2+5x+4=0$ and $(x+1)(x+4)=0$.
Test $x=-1$: $\sqrt4=2$ and $-1+3=2$. Accepted. Test $x=-4$: $\sqrt1=1$ but $-4+3=-1$. Rejected. The solution is $\boxed{x=-1}$.
Solve $\;\sqrt{4x+13}=x+2$.
Square: $4x+13=x^2+4x+4$, so $x^2=9$ and $x=3$ or $x=-3$.
Test $x=3$: $\sqrt{25}=5$ and $3+2=5$. Accepted. Test $x=-3$: $\sqrt{1}=1$ but $-3+2=-1$. Rejected.
Answer: $\boxed{x=3}$ only.
Two radicals: isolate, square, isolate, square
When two radicals appear, put one on each side before squaring. One squaring removes one radical; the second squaring removes the other.
Solve $\;\sqrt{3x+1}-\sqrt{x+4}=1$.
Rearrange: $\sqrt{3x+1}=1+\sqrt{x+4}$.
Square: $3x+1=1+2\sqrt{x+4}+(x+4)$, so $2x-4=2\sqrt{x+4}$ and $x-2=\sqrt{x+4}$.
Square again: $x^2-4x+4=x+4$, so $x^2-5x=0$ and $x=0$ or $x=5$.
Test $x=0$: $\sqrt1-\sqrt4=1-2=-1\neq1$. Rejected. Test $x=5$: $\sqrt{16}-\sqrt9=4-3=1$. Accepted. Answer: $\boxed{x=5}$.
Rational equations: excluded values come first
Before touching a rational equation, list every value of $x$ that makes any denominator zero. Those values are barred from the answer no matter what the algebra produces.
Solve $\;\dfrac{1}{x-2}+\dfrac{1}{x+2}=\dfrac{4}{x^2-4}$.
Since $x^2-4=(x-2)(x+2)$, the restrictions are $x\neq2$ and $x\neq-2$.
Multiply everything by $(x-2)(x+2)$: $(x+2)+(x-2)=4$, so $2x=4$ and $x=2$.
That is an excluded value, so it is discarded: the equation has $\boxed{\text{no solution}}$.
Solve $\;\dfrac{3}{x-1}+\dfrac{2}{x}=\dfrac{5}{x^2-x}$.
$x^2-x=x(x-1)$, so $x\neq0$ and $x\neq1$.
Multiply by $x(x-1)$: $3x+2(x-1)=5$, so $5x-2=5$ and $x=\tfrac75$.
Neither restriction is violated, so $\boxed{x=\tfrac75}$ stands.
Solve $\;\dfrac{2}{x}+\dfrac{3}{x+1}=2$.
Restrictions: $x\neq0$, $x\neq-1$. Multiply by $x(x+1)$: $2(x+1)+3x=2x(x+1)$, so $5x+2=2x^2+2x$ and $2x^2-3x-2=0$.
Factoring, $(2x+1)(x-2)=0$, so $x=-\tfrac12$ or $x=2$. Both are legal and both check: $\boxed{x=-\tfrac12 \text{ and } x=2}$.
Parameters: making a solution disappear
An equation of the form $\dfrac{x+k}{x-a}=m$ with $m\neq1$ produces exactly one candidate, and it has no solution precisely when that candidate lands on the excluded value $x=a$. When $m=1$ the $x$-terms cancel instead and the equation collapses to a statement about constants — a second, different mechanism, shown in the second example below.
For what value of $k$ does $\;\dfrac{x+k}{x-4}=3\;$ have no solution?
Restriction: $x\neq4$. Multiplying: $x+k=3x-12$, so $2x=k+12$ and $x=\dfrac{k+12}{2}$.
The equation fails only when this candidate equals $4$: $\dfrac{k+12}{2}=4$ gives $k+12=8$ and $\boxed{k=-4}$.
Check: $\dfrac{x-4}{x-4}=3$ says $1=3$ for every legal $x$ — indeed impossible.
The equation $\;\dfrac{3x+a}{x-2}=3\;$ has no solution. What can be said about $a$?
Multiply by $x-2$ (with $x\neq2$): $3x+a=3x-6$, so $a=-6$.
If $a=-6$ the equation reduces to $-6=-6$, true for every $x\neq2$ — infinitely many solutions. If $a\neq-6$ it reduces to a false numerical statement, so there is no solution. The answer is $\boxed{a\neq-6}$.
