Where these questions sit, and what the field accepts
Each Math module ends with a block of student-produced response questions — about $11$ across the two modules, so roughly five or six per module and a quarter of the section. There are no answer choices: you compute a number and type it.
Everything else about them is ordinary. They are drawn from the same four content domains as the multiple-choice questions, they carry the same weight, and the graphing calculator is available exactly as before. The only genuinely new thing is the entry field, and the entry field has rules that can turn a correct calculation into a zero.
No penalty for a wrong entry, so never leave one blank. Even an unfinished
calculation should be typed in before the module closes.
The difficulty curve restarts at the beginning of this block, so the first written-answer
question of a module is usually easier than the multiple-choice question just before it.
The character budget
A positive answer may use at most 5 characters. A negative answer may use at most 6 characters, counting the minus sign.
The decimal point counts as a character. The fraction bar counts as a character. The minus sign counts as a character. Digits count as characters.
A word problem gives an answer of $104{,}000$. Can it be typed?
Six digits do not fit in five characters, so the answer as computed cannot be the intended one. Almost always the question asked for the value in thousands, or a rate rather than a total, or a percent rather than a count. $\boxed{\text{Reread the last line of the question}}$ — the field length is free information about whether you solved the right thing.
The largest typable positive answer is $99999$; the most negative is $-99999$. An answer outside that range is a signal, not a nuisance.
Fractions, and the mixed-number trap
Fractions may be entered directly with a slash, and they do not have to be reduced: $\tfrac{6}{8}$ is accepted as it stands. Mixed numbers are not accepted.
Điền hỗn số. Nếu đáp án là $3\tfrac12$ mà bạn gõ 31/2, hệ thống đọc thành
$\dfrac{31}{2}=15.5$.
The answer to a question is $\tfrac{7}{2}$. Which entries are accepted?
7/2 (three characters), 3.5 (three characters) and 3.50 all work.
3 1/2 does not — the space cannot be typed — and 31/2 is read as
$\tfrac{31}{2}$. $\boxed{\texttt{7/2}\ \text{or}\ \texttt{3.5}}$
A calculation gives $\tfrac{123}{456}$. How should it be entered?
That fraction is seven characters, over budget. Reduce first: $\tfrac{123}{456}=\tfrac{41}{152}$,
which is six characters — still over. So switch to the decimal: $0.26973\ldots$, and
0.269 would waste a character on the leading zero, so type .2697.
$\boxed{\texttt{.2697}}$
Decimals that do not end
If the exact answer is a repeating decimal, the entry must fill the field. Rounding or truncating the final digit is allowed; stopping early is not.
Accepted: 2/3, .6666, .6667, 0.666, 0.667.
Rejected: .66, 0.66, .67, 0.67 — correct to two places,
but the field was not filled.
An answer works out to $-\tfrac73$. What can be typed?
$-\tfrac73=-2.3333\ldots$ The safest entry is -7/3, four characters. As a decimal,
the negative field allows six characters, so -2.333 fills it and is accepted; and
-2.33 is not. $\boxed{\texttt{-7/3}}$
Enter the fraction whenever there is one. A fraction is exact, shorter, and immune to the fill-the-field rule. Decimals are for irrational answers and for questions that explicitly say “rounded to the nearest …”.
Solve $x^2+6x+4=0$ and give the greater solution, rounded to the nearest hundredth.
$x=\dfrac{-6\pm\sqrt{36-16}}{2}=-3\pm\sqrt5$. Since $\sqrt5\approx2.2360679$, the greater root
is $-0.7639\ldots$, which rounds to $\boxed{-0.76}$. Here -.76 and -0.76
are both fine: an instructed rounding overrides the fill-the-field rule.
Symbols, units, and the quantity actually asked for
Negative answers are allowed, and so is $0$. What cannot be typed is anything symbolic.
$\pi$, $\sqrt2$, $e$, $x=3$, $3x$, a comma inside a number, a percent sign, a dollar sign, a degree sign, a unit such as cm, a range such as $2<x<5$, and two answers separated by a comma.
A question asks for $45\%$ of $3400$ dollars.
$0.45\times3400=1530$. The entry is 1530 — not $1530, not
1,530, not 1530 dollars. The comma alone would make a correct calculation
score zero. $\boxed{\texttt{1530}}$
A question asks for a value of $x$ satisfying $x^2-7x+12=0$.
Both $3$ and $4$ satisfy it. Enter one of them, not both. Typing 3,4 scores
zero, and so does 3 4. $\boxed{\texttt{3}\ \text{(or}\ \texttt{4)}}$
Percent, rate and unit traps
Nothing in the entry rules is hard. What actually costs points is answering a different question from the one asked, because there is no answer list to contradict you.
A store's monthly revenue rose from $\$4800$ to $\$5640$. By what percent did it rise?
The increase is $840$, and $\dfrac{840}{4800}=0.175$. The question says percent, so the
entry is $\boxed{\texttt{17.5}}$, not .175. Dividing by the new value instead of the
old one gives $14.9$, and dividing $5640$ by $4800$ gives $117.5$ — both are complete
answers to questions nobody asked.
| llll@ Fraction | Decimal | Accepted | Rejected |
|---|---|---|---|
| $\tfrac13$ | $0.3333\ldots$ | 1/3 .3333 0.333 | .33 |

| $\tfrac16$ | $0.1666\ldots$ | 1/6 .1667 0.166 | .17 |

| $\tfrac1{11}$ | $0.0909\ldots$ | 1/11 .0909 | .09 |
| $\tfrac1{12}$ | $0.0833\ldots$ | 1/12 .0833 | .08 |
Three shapes these questions take
Almost every student-produced response question on the Math section is one of three shapes, and each shape has its own way of going wrong.
- “What is the value of …” where the target is a combination such as $3x+2y$ or $x+y$. The risk is solving for the individual letters and stopping. The habit is to look for a combination of the given equations that produces the target directly.
- “What is a value of $x$ such that …” where several numbers work. The risk is typing two of them. The habit is to type the first one found and move on.
- A number in context — dollars, minutes, people, percent. The risk is the unit, not the arithmetic. The habit is to read the last six words of the question again after the number is on the screen.
Shape 1 in one line: if $2x+3y=17$ and $4x+y=19$, then adding gives $6x+4y=36$, so $3x+2y=18$ — found without ever knowing $x$ or $y$.
From the screen to the field
The graphing calculator gives its answers as rounded decimals, and this section's rules are about exact values. The two meet badly unless there is a fixed routine.
- Read the decimal, say $0.8333$.
- Guess the fraction from a small denominator: $2,3,4,5,6,8,9,11,12$. Here $0.8333\approx\tfrac56$.
- Type the guess on a new line and compare digits. If they match to every digit shown, the guess is the exact value.
- Enter the fraction. If no small denominator matches, the value is probably irrational and the question will have told you how to round.
A reading of $5.4641$ matches no small fraction — it is $2+2\sqrt3$. A reading of $3.8181$ is $\tfrac{42}{11}$. The difference between the two situations is the whole reason step 3 exists.
A checklist that takes four seconds
(1) Is this the quantity the last line asked for?
(2) Does it fit in $5$ characters (or $6$ with a minus)?
(3) Is it a fraction I can type instead of a decimal?
(4) If it must be a decimal and it repeats, did I fill the field?
(5) Did I remove every comma, sign and unit?
