Slope is a rate, and it carries units
For a linear relationship $y=mx+b$, the slope is \[ m \;=\; \frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x} \;=\; \frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}, \] and its unit is always the unit of $y$ per one unit of $x$. The intercept $b$ is the value of $y$ when $x=0$, and it carries the unit of $y$.
Write the unit before you write the number. If $y$ is litres and $x$ is minutes, the slope is “litres per minute” — so an answer of $-4$ means four litres leave every minute, and the minus sign is part of the meaning, not decoration.
A phone plan costs $C(t)=45+0.20t$ dollars for $t$ minutes of international calling. Interpret each number.
$45$: the cost in dollars when $t=0$ — the fixed monthly charge, paid even with no calls.
$0.20$: dollars per minute — each additional minute adds $\$0.20$ to the bill.
A useful sanity check: $C(100)=45+20=65$, and $C(101)=65.20$. The jump is exactly the slope.
Reading a model in context
- $x$ đếm cái gì, tính từ mốc nào? (“$t$ years after 2010” thì $t=0$ là năm 2010.)
$P(t)=4{,}800-240t$ models the population of a town $t$ years after $2010$. In what year does the model first predict a population below $3{,}000$?
Solve $4{,}800-240t<3{,}000$: $\;-240t<-1{,}800$, so $t>7.5$.
Because $t$ counts whole years and the population is below $3{,}000$ only after $t=7.5$, the first whole year satisfying it is $t=8$, i.e.\ the year $\boxed{2018}$.
Checking: $P(7)=4{,}800-1{,}680=3{,}120$ (still above), $P(8)=4{,}800-1{,}920=2{,}880$ (below).
“$t$ năm sau 2010” mà cộng thẳng $t$ vào $2010$ ra $2018$ thì đúng — nhưng nếu đề viết “$t$ years since the start of $2010$” hay cho bảng bắt đầu ở $t=1$, mốc lệch đi một năm. Đọc kỹ chữ “after”, “since”, “beginning in”.
Building the model from two facts
Two data points determine the line. The two points do not have to include the starting value — find the slope first, then walk back to the intercept.
A tank drains at a constant rate. It holds $82$ litres at $t=3$ minutes and $50$ litres at $t=11$ minutes. Write the model and find when the tank is empty.
Slope: $m=\dfrac{50-82}{11-3}=\dfrac{-32}{8}=-4$ litres per minute.
Intercept: at $t=3$ the volume is $82$, so $V(0)=82+4(3)=94$ litres. Hence $V(t)=94-4t$.
Empty when $94-4t=0$, that is $t=\dfrac{94}{4}=\boxed{23.5}$ minutes.
Check: $V(11)=94-44=50$. Correct.
A linear function $f$ satisfies $f(2)=17$ and $f(6)=5$. What is $f(11)$?
Slope: $\dfrac{5-17}{6-2}=\dfrac{-12}{4}=-3$.
From $x=6$ to $x=11$ is $5$ steps, so $f(11)=5+5(-3)=\boxed{-10}$.
Working from $x=2$ instead: $f(11)=17+9(-3)=17-27=-10$. Same answer.
Chains of units
Most of the hard rate questions are one multiplication chain in disguise. Write each rate as a fraction, line them up so unwanted units cancel, and the arithmetic is forced.
$\dfrac{\text{pages}}{\text{minute}}\times\dfrac{\text{minutes}}{\text{hour}} =\dfrac{\text{pages}}{\text{hour}}$. $\dfrac{\text{dollars}}{\text{gallon}}\times\dfrac{\text{gallons}}{\text{mile}} =\dfrac{\text{dollars}}{\text{mile}}$. The unit you want tells you which way to flip each fraction.
A printer prints $24$ pages per minute. One cartridge prints $6{,}000$ pages and costs $\$75$. What is the ink cost of $5$ hours of continuous printing?
Pages: $24\;\dfrac{\text{pages}}{\text{min}}\times 60\;\dfrac{\text{min}}{\text{hr}} \times 5\;\text{hr}=7{,}200$ pages.
Cartridges: $\dfrac{7{,}200}{6{,}000}=1.2$ cartridges.
Cost: $1.2\times 75=\boxed{\$90}$.
A car averages $32$ miles per gallon and fuel costs $\$3.60$ per gallon. With a fuel budget of $\$54$, how many miles can be driven?
Gallons affordable: $\dfrac{54}{3.60}=15$ gallons.
Miles: $15\times 32=\boxed{480}$ miles.
Equivalently, the cost per mile is $\dfrac{3.60}{32}=\$0.1125$, and $\dfrac{54}{0.1125}=480$.
When the model changes unit
The nastiest version gives a rate in one time unit and asks for a model in another. Convert the rate first, then build the model — converting at the end is where signs and factors go missing.
A drone starts at an altitude of $300$ metres and descends at $2.5$ metres per second. Write a function giving its altitude, in metres, $m$ minutes after the descent begins.
Convert the rate: $2.5\;\dfrac{\text{m}}{\text{s}}\times 60\;\dfrac{\text{s}}{\text{min}} =150$ metres per minute.
Since the drone is descending, the model is $\boxed{A(m)=300-150m}$.
Check: after $m=2$ minutes it has fallen $300$ m, so $A(2)=0$ — and $2$ minutes at $2.5$ m/s is indeed $120\times2.5=300$ m.
A conveyor belt moves at $1.2$ metres per second and boxes sit $0.8$ metres apart along it. How many boxes pass a fixed sensor in one hour?
Boxes per second: $\dfrac{1.2\;\text{m/s}}{0.8\;\text{m/box}}=1.5$ boxes per second.
Per hour: $1.5\times 3{,}600=\boxed{5{,}400}$ boxes.
Quy tắc an toàn: đổi đơn vị ở tốc độ, không đổi ở kết quả. Nếu đề hỏi mô hình theo phút mà bạn giữ $2.5$ rồi cuối bài mới chia/nhân $60$, khả năng nhân nhầm chiều là rất cao vì lúc đó con số đã trộn với hằng số ban đầu. Đổi trước, mô hình sau.
Comparing two linear models
Two plans, two lines. “When are they equal” is one equation; “when is one cheaper” is one inequality; and the answer to the second is always an interval bounded by the answer to the first.
Plan A costs $\$30$ plus $\$0.15$ per minute; Plan B costs $\$12$ plus $\$0.25$ per minute. For how many minutes do the two plans cost the same, and after that which one is cheaper?
Set $30+0.15x=12+0.25x$. Then $18=0.10x$, so $x=\boxed{180}$ minutes.
For $x>180$, Plan B grows faster ($0.25>0.15$), so Plan A is cheaper beyond $180$ minutes; below $180$ minutes Plan B is cheaper.
Check at $x=200$: A costs $30+30=60$; B costs $12+50=62$.
Beyond the crossing point, the model with the larger slope is always the larger one. That single sentence answers every “which is cheaper after …” question without further computation.
