The $45$-$45$-$90$ triangle
Cut a square along its diagonal. Each half has angles $45^\circ$, $45^\circ$, $90^\circ$, two equal legs, and a hypotenuse the Pythagorean theorem gives as $\sqrt{s^2+s^2}=s\sqrt2$.
\[\text{leg}\;:\;\text{leg}\;:\;\text{hypotenuse}\;=\;1\;:\;1\;:\;\sqrt2 .\] Going up (leg to hypotenuse) multiply by $\sqrt2$. Going down (hypotenuse to leg) divide by $\sqrt2$, i.e.\ multiply by $\tfrac{\sqrt2}{2}$.
(a) A $45$-$45$-$90$ triangle has legs of length $5$. Find the hypotenuse.
(b) Another has hypotenuse $16$. Find each leg.
(a) $5\sqrt2$. (b) $\dfrac{16}{\sqrt2}=\dfrac{16\sqrt2}{2}=8\sqrt2$. Check: $(8\sqrt2)^2+(8\sqrt2)^2 =128+128=256=16^2$. Answers: $\boxed{5\sqrt2}$ and $\boxed{8\sqrt2}$.
The $30$-$60$-$90$ triangle
Cut an equilateral triangle of side $2$ down the middle. The half has angles $30^\circ$, $60^\circ$, $90^\circ$, hypotenuse $2$ (an original side), short leg $1$ (half the base), and long leg $\sqrt{4-1}=\sqrt3$.
\[\text{short leg}\;:\;\text{long leg}\;:\;\text{hypotenuse}\;=\;1\;:\;\sqrt3\;:\;2 .\] The short leg is opposite the $30^\circ$ angle, the long leg is opposite the $60^\circ$ angle, the hypotenuse is opposite the right angle. Bigger angle, bigger side — always.
A $30$-$60$-$90$ triangle has hypotenuse $14$. Find the other two sides.
Hypotenuse corresponds to $2$, so the scale factor is $\tfrac{14}{2}=7$. Short leg $=1\cdot7=7$, long leg $=\sqrt3\cdot7=7\sqrt3$. Answer: $\boxed{7\ \text{and}\ 7\sqrt3}$.
A $30$-$60$-$90$ triangle has long leg $15$. Find the hypotenuse.
The long leg corresponds to $\sqrt3$, so the scale factor is $\tfrac{15}{\sqrt3} =\tfrac{15\sqrt3}{3}=5\sqrt3$. The hypotenuse is $2\cdot5\sqrt3=\boxed{10\sqrt3}$. Sanity check: $10\sqrt3\approx17.3$, which is larger than $15$, as a hypotenuse must be.
Where these triangles hide
- Square, side $s$: the diagonal is $s\sqrt2$; each half is $45$-$45$-$90$.
- Equilateral triangle, side $s$: the altitude is $\dfrac{s\sqrt3}{2}$ and the area is $\dfrac{s^2\sqrt3}{4}$; each half is $30$-$60$-$90$.
- Regular hexagon, side $s$: it is six equilateral triangles of side $s$, so its area is $\dfrac{3s^2\sqrt3}{2}$ and the distance from centre to a vertex is $s$.
- Trapezoid with $60^\circ$ base angles: dropping both altitudes cuts off two $30$-$60$-$90$ triangles.
An equilateral triangle has side $8$. Find its altitude and its area.
The altitude splits it into two $30$-$60$-$90$ triangles with hypotenuse $8$ and short leg $4$. The altitude is the long leg: $4\sqrt3$. Area $=\tfrac12(8)(4\sqrt3)=\boxed{16\sqrt3}$.
A regular hexagon has side $4$. Find its area.
Six equilateral triangles of side $4$, each of area $\dfrac{4^2\sqrt3}{4}=4\sqrt3$. Total $=6\cdot4\sqrt3=\boxed{24\sqrt3}$.
Working backwards from an area
An equilateral triangle has area $25\sqrt3$. Find its side.
$\dfrac{s^2\sqrt3}{4}=25\sqrt3$. Divide both sides by $\sqrt3$: $\dfrac{s^2}{4}=25$, so $s^2=100$ and $s=\boxed{10}$. (Its altitude is then $5\sqrt3$.)
A $30$-$60$-$90$ triangle has area $32\sqrt3$. Find its hypotenuse.
Write the legs as $x$ and $x\sqrt3$. Area $=\tfrac12\cdot x\cdot x\sqrt3 =\dfrac{x^2\sqrt3}{2}=32\sqrt3$, so $x^2=64$ and $x=8$. The hypotenuse is $2x=\boxed{16}$.
Two special triangles in one figure
A very common setup stacks the two triangles, or stacks a special triangle onto an ordinary one, and gives a single length that must be carried across the shared side.
In right triangle $ABC$, $\angle C=90^\circ$, $\angle A=30^\circ$ and $AB=20$. Point $D$ lies on $AC$ so that $\angle DBC=45^\circ$. Find $CD$.
In $ABC$: $BC$ is opposite the $30^\circ$ angle, so $BC=\tfrac{20}{2}=10$. In $DBC$: $\angle C=90^\circ$ and $\angle DBC=45^\circ$, so $\angle BDC=45^\circ$ and the triangle is $45$-$45$-$90$ with legs $CD$ and $CB$ equal. Hence $CD=10$. Answer $\boxed{10}$.
In right triangle $ABC$, $\angle C=90^\circ$, $\angle B=60^\circ$ and $BC=4$. The altitude from $C$ meets $AB$ at $D$. Find $CD$.
Triangle $BDC$ has $\angle BDC=90^\circ$, $\angle B=60^\circ$, so $\angle BCD=30^\circ$ and $BC=4$ is its hypotenuse. Then $BD$ (opposite $30^\circ$) is $2$ and $CD$ (opposite $60^\circ$) is $2\sqrt3$. Answer $\boxed{2\sqrt3}$.
