Four facts generate everything
Almost every angle question on the exam is these four statements chained together. Nothing else is needed.
- Linear pair. Two angles forming a straight line sum to $180^\circ$.
- Vertical angles. Two lines crossing create two pairs of equal opposite angles.
- Parallel lines cut by a transversal. Corresponding angles are equal, alternate interior angles are equal, and same-side (co-interior) angles sum to $180^\circ$. Consequence: only two distinct angle measures appear in the whole figure, and they add to $180^\circ$.
- Triangle sum. The three interior angles of any triangle sum to $180^\circ$.
In the figure above, with $\ell\parallel m$: angles $1,4,5,8$ all share one measure and angles $2,3,6,7$ all share the other. Any angle from the first group plus any angle from the second group equals $180^\circ$.
Lines $\ell$ and $m$ are parallel. A transversal makes an angle of $(5x-12)^\circ$ with $\ell$ and the co-interior angle at $m$ measures $(2x+10)^\circ$. Find the two angle measures.
Co-interior angles sum to $180^\circ$: $\;(5x-12)+(2x+10)=180$, so $7x-2=180$ and $x=26$. The angles are $5(26)-12=118^\circ$ and $2(26)+10=62^\circ$; they check out because $118+62=\boxed{180}$.
The exterior angle — the shortcut worth having
Extend one side of a triangle. The exterior angle created equals the sum of the two remote interior angles — the two angles not adjacent to it.
$\angle ACD=\angle A+\angle B$. Two consequences used constantly: an exterior angle is always larger than either remote interior angle, and knowing the exterior angle plus one remote interior angle gives the other in a single subtraction.
In triangle $ABC$, side $BC$ is extended past $C$ to a point $D$. If $\angle ACD=118^\circ$ and $\angle B=47^\circ$, find $\angle A$.
$\angle ACD=\angle A+\angle B$, so $118=\angle A+47$ and $\angle A=\boxed{71^\circ}$. Check: $\angle ACB=180-118=62$, and $71+47+62=180$.
In triangle $ABC$, $AB=AC$ and $BC$ is extended past $C$ to $D$ with $\angle ACD=121^\circ$. Find $\angle A$.
$\angle ACB=180-121=59^\circ$. Since $AB=AC$, the angles opposite them are equal: $\angle B=\angle ACB=59^\circ$. Then $\angle A=180-59-59=\boxed{62^\circ}$.
Figures are not drawn to scale
Every geometry figure on the exam carries the same silent rule: the picture shows how the parts connect, not how big they are. A segment drawn twice as long may be shorter. An angle that looks square may be $80^\circ$.
Usable from a figure: which points lie on which segments, which angles are adjacent, which lines are marked parallel or perpendicular, and every measure written in symbols. Not usable: relative lengths, relative angle sizes, and anything that “looks” right.
In a figure, triangle $ABC$ looks equilateral, but the labels give $\angle A=(2k)^\circ$, $\angle B=(3k-10)^\circ$ and $\angle C=(k+10)^\circ$. Find $\angle B$.
$2k+(3k-10)+(k+10)=180$ collapses to $6k=180$, so $k=30$. Then $\angle A=60^\circ$, $\angle B=3(30)-10=\boxed{80^\circ}$, $\angle C=40^\circ$. The triangle is not equilateral at all, and the drawing carried no information.
Câu “must be true” đi kèm hình vẽ lệch là bẫy nặng nhất của nhóm hình học.
Chaining through several triangles
When a figure contains two or three triangles sharing a vertex or a side, do not chase every angle. Pick the triangle that already has two known angles, finish it, and carry the shared angle into the next triangle.
Point $D$ lies inside triangle $ABC$, and segments $BD$ and $CD$ are drawn. Given $\angle BAC=32^\circ$, $\angle ABD=27^\circ$ and $\angle ACD=41^\circ$, find $\angle BDC$.
In triangle $ABC$: $\angle ABC+\angle ACB=180-32=148^\circ$. The parts left over at $B$ and $C$ are $\angle DBC=\angle ABC-27$ and $\angle DCB=\angle ACB-41$, so \[\angle DBC+\angle DCB=148-27-41=80^\circ .\] In triangle $BDC$: $\angle BDC=180-80=\boxed{100^\circ}$. Note the shortcut this reveals: $\angle BDC=\angle A+\angle ABD+\angle ACD$.
The bisectors of $\angle B$ and $\angle C$ of triangle $ABC$ meet at $P$. If $\angle A=50^\circ$, find $\angle BPC$.
$\angle B+\angle C=180-50=130^\circ$. The bisectors contribute half of each, so inside triangle $BPC$ the two base angles sum to $\tfrac{130}{2}=65^\circ$. Hence $\angle BPC=180-65=\boxed{115^\circ}$. In general $\angle BPC=90^\circ+\tfrac12\angle A$, which is always obtuse.
Polygons
For a polygon with $n$ sides: \[\text{sum of interior angles}=(n-2)\cdot180^\circ,\qquad \text{sum of exterior angles}=360^\circ\ \text{always}.\] For a regular polygon each exterior angle is $\dfrac{360^\circ}{n}$, and each interior angle is $180^\circ-\dfrac{360^\circ}{n}$.
Each interior angle of a regular polygon is five times its exterior angle. How many sides does it have?
Interior and exterior form a linear pair, so $5e+e=180$, giving $e=30^\circ$. Then $n=\dfrac{360}{30}=\boxed{12}$.
The four interior angles of a quadrilateral measure $(x+10)^\circ$, $(2x-20)^\circ$, $(3x)^\circ$ and $(2x+10)^\circ$. Find the largest angle.
The sum is $(4-2)\cdot180=360$, so $8x=360$ and $x=45$. The angles are $55^\circ,\;70^\circ,\;135^\circ,\;100^\circ$, summing to $360$. Largest: $\boxed{135^\circ}$.
