Degree, leading coefficient, and the two ends
For large $|x|$ the highest-degree term swamps every other term, so the two ends of the graph are decided by exactly two things: the degree (even or odd) and the sign of the leading coefficient. Nothing else in the polynomial matters at the ends.
| leading coefficient $>0$ | leading coefficient $<0$ | |
|---|---|---|
| even degree | up on both ends | down on both ends |
| odd degree | down on the left, up on the right | up on the left, down on the right |
Describe the end behavior of $\;p(x)=-4x^5+3x^2+8$.
Degree $5$ is odd, so the two ends point in opposite directions. The leading coefficient $-4$ is negative, which flips the standard odd-degree picture. Hence \[ p(x)\to +\infty \text{ as } x\to-\infty, \qquad p(x)\to -\infty \text{ as } x\to+\infty . \] The $+3x^2$ and the $+8$ change the middle of the curve but change nothing at the ends.
Zeros, factors, and remainders
Factor Theorem. $p(a)=0$ $\iff$ $(x-a)$ is a factor of $p$ $\iff$ the graph of $y=p(x)$ crosses or touches the $x$-axis at $(a,0)$.
Remainder Theorem. When $p(x)$ is divided by $(x-a)$, the remainder equals $p(a)$. Divisibility is the special case “remainder $=0$”.
$p(x)=x^3-2x^2+ax-6$, where $a$ is a constant, and $x-3$ is a factor of $p$. Find $a$.
A factor $x-3$ means $p(3)=0$: \[ 27-18+3a-6=0 \;\Longrightarrow\; 3+3a=0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \boxed{a=-1}. \] Long division would give the same answer with ten times the work.
When $p(x)=x^3+3x^2-x+c$ is divided by $x+2$, the remainder is $5$. Find $c$.
Dividing by $x+2$ means $a=-2$, so the remainder is $p(-2)$: \[ p(-2)=-8+12+2+c=6+c . \] Setting $6+c=5$ gives $\boxed{c=-1}$.
Using $a=+2$ instead is the standard slip: it gives $p(2)=8+12-2+c=18+c$, hence $c=-13$, and that value will be on the answer list.
Multiplicity: cross or touch
Write the polynomial in factored form. A factor $(x-r)^m$ makes $r$ a zero of multiplicity $m$, and $m$ decides what the graph does there.
- $m$ odd: the graph crosses the axis — the sign of $p$ changes.
- $m$ even: the graph touches the axis and turns back — the sign of $p$ does not change.
The degree of $p$ is the sum of all multiplicities, so multiplicity is also how a low count of distinct zeros still fills out a high degree.
Where does the graph of $\;p(x)=(x+3)(x-1)^2(x-4)\;$ meet the $x$-axis, and what is the sign of $p$ on each interval?
Zeros: $x=-3$ (multiplicity $1$, crosses), $x=1$ (multiplicity $2$, touches), $x=4$ (multiplicity $1$, crosses). Degree $=1+2+1=4$, leading coefficient $+1$, so both ends go up.
Test one point per interval: $p(-4)=(-1)(25)(-8)=200>0$; $p(0)=(3)(1)(-4)=-12<0$; $p(2)=(5)(1)(-2)=-10<0$; $p(5)=(8)(16)(1)=128>0$.
Rebuilding a polynomial from its graph
If a polynomial of degree $n$ has zeros $r_1,\dots,r_n$ (listed with multiplicity), then $p(x)=a(x-r_1)\cdots(x-r_n)$ for some nonzero constant $a$. One extra point pins down $a$.
A polynomial $p$ of degree $3$ has $x$-intercepts at $-1$, $2$ and $4$ only, and $p(0)=16$. Find the leading coefficient.
$p(x)=a(x+1)(x-2)(x-4)$. Then \[ p(0)=a(1)(-2)(-4)=8a=16 \;\Longrightarrow\; \boxed{a=2}. \] Reporting $8$ (the product of the bracket values) or $16$ (the given output) are the two distractors this question is built to catch.
Đề dạng “đồ thị cắt trục hoành tại $\dots$ và đi qua điểm $\dots$” luôn giải theo đúng hai bước: viết dạng nhân tử có hằng số $a$ ở trước, rồi thay điểm đã cho để tìm $a$. Bỏ hằng số $a$ là mất điểm ở mọi câu hỏi tiếp theo về giá trị của $p$.
The sign of a polynomial
To solve $p(x)>0$ or $p(x)<0$: factor completely, mark every zero on a number line, then find the sign on one interval and propagate — flipping at odd-multiplicity zeros, holding at even-multiplicity zeros.
Solve $\;x(x-3)^2(x+2)>0$.
Zeros: $-2$, $0$, $3$ (multiplicity $2$). Degree $4$, leading coefficient positive, so both ends are positive.
$x=-3$: $(-3)(36)(-1)=108>0$. $x=-1$: $(-1)(16)(1)=-16<0$. $x=1$: $(1)(4)(3)=12>0$. $x=4$: $(4)(1)(6)>0$.
The sign holds across $x=3$ because that zero is double, so the solution is \[ \boxed{x<-2 \quad\text{or}\quad 0<x<3 \quad\text{or}\quad x>3 .} \] Note $x=3$ itself is excluded: there $p(3)=0$, which is not $>0$.
$p(x)=(x+2)(x^2-6x+c)$, where $c$ is a constant. For which values of $c$ does $p$ have exactly two distinct real zeros?
$x=-2$ is always a zero. The quadratic $x^2-6x+c$ contributes zeros according to its discriminant $\Delta=36-4c$.
Case 1 — the quadratic has a double root. $\Delta=0$ gives $c=9$, and $x^2-6x+9=(x-3)^2$ has the single root $3$. Distinct zeros of $p$: $-2$ and $3$. Two.
Case 2 — the quadratic has two roots, one of which is $-2$. Then $4+12+c=0$, so $c=-16$ and $x^2-6x-16=(x-8)(x+2)$. Distinct zeros of $p$: $-2$ and $8$. Two.
Any other $c$ with $\Delta>0$ gives three distinct zeros, and $\Delta<0$ gives only one. So $\boxed{c=9 \text{ or } c=-16}$.
“Đúng hai nghiệm phân biệt” không đồng nghĩa với “biệt thức bằng $0$”. Còn một đường nữa: phần bậc hai có hai nghiệm nhưng trùng với nghiệm đã có sẵn. Bỏ sót nhánh này là kiểu mất điểm không thể phát hiện bằng cách thử lại một đáp án — phải xét đủ hai trường hợp ngay từ đầu.
Equations that turn into polynomials
Squaring both sides of an equation is not reversible: it can manufacture solutions that do not satisfy the original equation. Every root found after squaring must be substituted back.
Solve $\;\sqrt{x+7}=x+1$.
Square: $x+7=(x+1)^2=x^2+2x+1$, so $x^2+x-6=0$ and $(x+3)(x-2)=0$, giving $x=-3$ or $x=2$.
Check $x=-3$: left side $\sqrt{4}=2$, right side $-2$. Not equal — discard. Check $x=2$: left side $\sqrt{9}=3$, right side $3$. Equal — keep.
Only $\boxed{x=2}$ solves the original equation.
