Tính từ ngắn

Một âm tiết thì thêm -er và -est: tall → taller → the tallest. Phụ âm + y đổi thành -ier / -iest: happy → happier → the happiest. Một nguyên âm ngắn kẹp giữa hai phụ âm thì gấp đôi chữ cuối: big → bigger → the biggest.

Tính từ dài

Từ hai âm tiết trở lên thì dùng more và the most: beautiful → more beautiful → the most beautiful. Không bao giờ dùng cả hai cùng lúc — more taller là sai.

than và the

So sánh hơn đi với than: He is taller than me. So sánh nhất đi với the: She is the tallest in the class.

Hai từ bất quy tắc

good → better → the best; bad → worse → the worst.
