Listening for detail: times, prices and days
Predict before you listen
Look at the gap in the question. If it comes after at, a time is coming. After a currency symbol, a price. After on, a day. Knowing the type of answer means you only have to catch one kind of word.
Speakers change their minds
Checkpoint recordings often give a wrong number first and then correct it: “It's at four… sorry, no, half past four.” The answer is always the corrected one. Listen for sorry, actually, no wait, in fact — those words are a signal that the previous answer is now wrong.
Write short
Answers are usually one or two words or a number. Writing a whole sentence wastes time and risks a spelling mistake in words you did not need.

Băng của Checkpoint rất hay đưa ra một con số sai trước rồi sửa lại: “It's at four… sorry, no, half past four.” Đáp án luôn là con số đã sửa. Hãy nghe những chữ sorry, actually, no wait, in fact — đó là tín hiệu rằng thông tin vừa nói đã bị huỷ.
Viết ngắn
Đáp án thường chỉ một hai từ hoặc một con số. Viết cả câu vừa mất thời gian vừa dễ sai chính tả ở những chữ không cần thiết.
Bài nghe: “The library opens on Tuesday… oh, sorry, that's the old timetable. It opens on Thursday now, at nine o'clock.” Câu hỏi: The library opens on ______ at ______.
Bước 1 — đoán loại đáp án. Sau on là một thứ trong tuần; sau at là một giờ.
Bước 2 — nghe và ghi nháp. Lần đầu nghe thấy Tuesday.
Bước 3 — bắt tín hiệu sửa. Có chữ sorry và that's the old timetable — thông tin cũ đã bị huỷ.
Bước 4 — lấy thông tin mới. Thursday và nine o'clock.
Đáp án: Thursday · nine o'clock (hoặc $9$ a.m.).
