Higher-Order Derivatives and Choosing the Right Rule
Higher-order derivatives
Differentiating $f'$ again gives the second derivative $f''$; repeating gives $f'''$, $f^{(4)}$, … In Leibniz notation $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}$, $\dfrac{d^ny}{dx^n}$. Nothing new is memorised — but every product, quotient or chain structure returns at every step, so simplify and factor before differentiating again.
Worked example: $y=x^2e^{3x}$. Product and chain: $y'=2xe^{3x}+3x^2e^{3x}=e^{3x}(3x^2+2x)$. Product again: $y''=3e^{3x}(3x^2+2x)+e^{3x}(6x+2)=e^{3x}(9x^2+12x+2)$. Factoring $e^{3x}$ out first is what keeps the second step short.
Implicit curves. $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}$ is the derivative of the expression for $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ (quotient rule, $y$ still a function of $x$), after which the known $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ must be substituted back so the answer contains only $x$ and $y$.
Choosing the procedure
Rewrite first: $\sqrt{x}=x^{1/2}$, $\dfrac{1}{x^3}=x^{-3}$, $\dfrac{x^2+1}{x}=x+x^{-1}$ — many quotient-rule problems are power-rule problems in disguise. Bases other than $e$: $a^x=e^{x\ln a}$, hence $\dfrac{d}{dx}a^x=a^x\ln a$ and $\dfrac{d}{dx}\log_a x=\dfrac{1}{x\ln a}$.
Cyclic patterns. Derivatives of $\sin x$ cycle $\cos x,\ -\sin x,\ -\cos x,\ \sin x$ with period $4$, so for $f(x)=\sin x$, $f^{(27)}(x)=f^{(3)}(x)=-\cos x$ because $27=4\cdot6+3$.
Cơ số khác $e$: $\dfrac{d}{dx}a^x=a^x\ln a$, $\dfrac{d}{dx}\log_a x=\dfrac1{x\ln a}$.
Chu kỳ của $\sin$: $\sin\to\cos\to-\sin\to-\cos\to\sin$, chu kỳ $4$. Hỏi $f^{(27)}$ thì lấy $27$ chia $4$ dư $3$ ⇒ bằng $f'''=-\cos x$.
Cho đường cong $x^2+y^2=25$. (a) Tìm $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$. (b) Tìm $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}$ theo $x$ và $y$. (c) Tính $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}$ tại $(3,4)$ và cho biết đường cong lồi hay lõm tại đó.
(a) Đạo hàm hai vế theo $x$: $2x+2y\dfrac{dy}{dx}=0\Rightarrow\dfrac{dy}{dx}=-\dfrac{x}{y}$.
(b) Quy tắc thương cho $-\dfrac{x}{y}$, nhớ $y$ là hàm của $x$:
$$\frac{d^2y}{dx^2}=-\frac{y\cdot1-x\dfrac{dy}{dx}}{y^2}=-\frac{y-x\left(-\dfrac{x}{y}\right)}{y^2}=-\frac{y^2+x^2}{y^3}$$Dùng $x^2+y^2=25$: $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}=-\dfrac{25}{y^3}$. Dừng ở dòng còn $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ chỉ được nửa điểm.
(c) Tại $(3,4)$: $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}=-\dfrac{25}{64}$. Since $\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}\lt0$ at $(3,4)$, the curve is concave down there.
Ba bẫy ở bài đạo hàm cấp cao. Một: $\dfrac{d}{dx}2^x$ không phải $x\cdot2^{x-1}$ (quy tắc luỹ thừa chỉ dùng khi số mũ là hằng) mà là $2^x\ln2$; phương án nhiễu $2^x$ (quên $\ln2$) luôn có mặt. Hai: đạo hàm cấp hai của hàm ẩn mà kết quả còn chứa $\dfrac{dy}{dx}$ là chưa hoàn tất — rubric ghi rõ “in terms of $x$ and $y$”.
