Why the easy word is the trap
On this test the rare word is rarely the answer, and the answer is rarely a rare word. What the item exploits is that most common English words carry a second, older, or more technical sense that students meet only in academic prose. A student who knows check as to verify will not recognise it as to restrain, and will reject the correct answer confidently.
The four choices in these items are usually built as a set: one word in its academic sense (the answer) and three words drawn from the everyday sense of the same idea. If three choices cluster around one plain meaning and the fourth sits slightly apart, the fourth is worth a hard look.
Học sinh Việt Nam thường học từ vựng theo cặp một từ — một nghĩa. Đề SAT khai thác đúng thói quen đó. Cách chữa không phải là học thêm từ hiếm, mà là với mỗi từ quen hãy hỏi thêm: từ này còn nghĩa nào khác khi làm động từ? khi đi với tân ngữ trừu tượng? trong văn viết học thuật? Một buổi học mười từ quen theo cách đó ăn điểm hơn học năm mươi từ lạ.
A seismometer records ground motion continuously, but most of what it records is noise: traffic, surf, wind in trees. An event counts as an earthquake only when the same arrival appears at three or more stations in a pattern consistent with a single source. A tremor that one instrument is, until the others confirm it, indistinguishable from a passing truck.
- predicts
- registers
- enrols
- silences
Enrols (C) is the everyday sense of the same word applied to people, and it is the reason the answer looks wrong at first glance. The verb here must mean takes down as a reading, which is what a seismometer does. Predicts (A) reverses the time order, and silences (D) would make the instrument act on the ground. Answer (B).
A working list
These are the words that recur. Learn the academic sense, not a translation.
register — take down as a reading check — restrain
sustain — keep going, support a claim
qualify — limit want — lack yield — produce
admit — allow, leave room for
arrest — stop economy — sparing use appreciate — rise in
value apprehend — grasp
arch — knowing bent — inclination cardinal — fundamental
couch — express in words
flag — lose vigour gloss — explain intimate — hint
prescribe — lay down as a rule
scan — examine closely table — set aside tender — offer
formally trying — difficult
stem — halt harbour — hold on to sanction — authorise
found — establish
occasion — bring about office — function moment —
importance canvass — examine
The list is a sample, not a syllabus. The items in the practice section deliberately use words that are not on it, because the skill being trained is reading the sentence, not matching a list.
The argument the essay opens with is bold, and the first two pages support it with evidence drawn from three archives. The remaining twenty pages do not. The sources thin out, the claim widens, and by the conclusion the author is asserting what he set out to demonstrate. The essay cannot the position it takes; it announces one and then talks past it.
- accept
- nourish
- sustain
- endure
Nourish (B) and endure (D) are both built from the everyday senses of the answer's word family — feeding and putting up with — and neither takes a position as an object. Accept (A) would describe agreement, not support. The verb needed is the one meaning keep a claim standing under its evidence. Answer (C).
Substitute a paraphrase, not a synonym
The reliable move is to say the sentence again in your own words without the blank, then ask which choice does that job. A synonym test fails here, because the distractors are synonyms of the wrong sense.
The two chambers of the legislature were designed so that neither could act alone. A bill passed by one had to survive the other, and the delay this imposed was not an inefficiency but the point: haste in one chamber would meet resistance in the second. Each chamber, in the framers' own language, the other.
- examined
- checked
- verified
- copied
Paraphrase first: each chamber held the other back. Now the choices sort themselves. Examined (A) and verified (C) are the everyday sense of the answer and describe scrutiny, not restraint, which is what haste… would meet resistance establishes. Copied (D) contradicts neither could act alone. Answer (B).
Học sinh giỏi hay thua ở đúng chỗ này: họ biết nghĩa thông dụng rõ đến mức loại thẳng phương án đúng vì “từ đó đâu có nghĩa như vậy”. Quy tắc cứng: khi ba phương án nghe đều hợp và một phương án nghe sai hẳn, hãy thử tra lại nghĩa thứ hai của phương án nghe sai trước khi loại nó.
The grammar around the blank picks the sense
Transitivity, the object, and the preposition decide which sense is available. Yield to is surrender; yield with a direct object is produce. Want with a direct object in formal prose is lack.
The manuscript is complete in every other respect: the argument is finished, the citations are in place, the index was compiled and checked. It only a title, and the fair copy went to the printer with the first page left blank for one to be supplied later.
- wants
- desires
- denies
- forgets
The subject is a manuscript, which has no mental states, so desires (B) and forgets (D) fail on register before they fail on meaning. Denies (C) reverses the relation. The verb must mean is missing, and the blank first page confirms it. Answer (A).
Two soil treatments were compared over four growing seasons. The first raised the harvest in year one and then fell back to the control level. The second produced no visible change until the third season, after which it outperformed the control in every plot. Judged on a single year the first treatment looks better; judged across the trial, the second more.
- relinquishes
- surrenders
- concedes
- yields
Three of the four choices mean give way, which is the sense that fits yield to pressure but not yield a harvest. With no preposition and a comparative object, the verb must mean produces. Answer (D).
Mẹo thực dụng: nhìn xem chỗ trống có giới từ theo sau không. Yield to = nhượng bộ, yield + tân ngữ = cho ra sản lượng. Check on = kiểm tra, check + tân ngữ trừu tượng = kìm. Admit of = cho phép có, admit + người = cho vào. Giới từ là chìa khoá mở đúng nghĩa, và đề luôn để sẵn chìa khoá đó trong câu.
Distractors built from the everyday sense
Once you see how the distractor set is made, the item becomes fast: find the plain-sense cluster, then check whether the odd one out has an academic sense that fits.
The late drawings use perhaps a dozen lines to a figure. A shoulder is one stroke, a turning head two, and the blank paper does the rest. What the artist had spent forty years learning was not how to add but how to take away, and the of the late sheets is the visible result of that subtraction.
- economy
- wealth
- budget
- trade
All four choices belong to the vocabulary of money, which is exactly the misdirection. Only one of them also names sparing use of means, and not how to add but how to take away points straight at it. Answer (A).
The pigment layer had begun to lift from the panel, and every change in humidity loosened it further. Conservators could not undo what a century in an unheated church had done, but by sealing the panel in a case with controlled humidity they could the process, and the flaking has not advanced in the eleven years since.
- accuse
- capture
- arrest
- hasten
Capture (B) and accuse (A) are drawn from the policing sense of the answer and take people, not processes. Hasten (D) is blocked by has not advanced. The verb must mean bring to a stop, and could not undo… but tells you it stops rather than reverses. Answer (C).
