What is TOEFL iBT and who should take it

TOEFL iBT is the academic English test from ETS — the US testing organisation — taken entirely on a computer, covering Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. From January 2026 the test has a new format and scores are reported on a 1–6 scale, alongside the familiar 0–120 scale during the transition.

TOEFL is the foundation of a US – Canada study-abroad application: reaching the score your university requires is the entry condition, then the SAT and AP make your application stand out.
1Familiar to universities in the US and Canada

TOEFL is the English certificate tied to the North American university system; most US and Canadian universities accept TOEFL alongside IELTS.

2Taken entirely on a computer

All 4 skills are taken on a computer and Speaking is spoken into a microphone — suits students used to working on a computer.

3At a test centre or at home

IIG runs the test at centres in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City; ETS also offers an at-home version (Home Edition) — note that Australia does not accept it for visas.

4Academic tests, close to the university environment

Reading and listening passages are set in lecture halls and student life — preparing for TOEFL is also preparing for your first year at university.

TOEFL iBT score scale and conversion

From 21 Jan 2026, each section (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) and the total score are reported on a 1–6 scale in 0.5 increments; the total = the average of the 4 sections rounded to the nearest half band (e.g. 5.125 → 5; 5.25 → 5.5). The same number = the same CEFR level in every section. During the 2-year transition, score reports also show an equivalent 0–120 score (the midpoint of the range, e.g. 4.5 alongside 90). The 'mo' column is the corresponding old 0–30 score range for each section; IELTS is the ETS comparison table (rounded up to avoid overstating ability). ETS suggests universities requiring 100/90/80/70 switch to 5/4.5/4/3.5.

What TOEFL scores are used for

University/graduate admissions abroad

ETS states that TOEFL is accepted by more than 13,500 institutions in more than 160 countries (US, Canada, UK, Australia, Europe, Asia). Required scores are set by each institution.

Source ↗

Australian student visa

According to the 2026–27 Bulletin, only TOEFL iBT scores from tests taken before 21 Jan 2026 and the TOEFL iBT Australia test are currently approved for Australian visas. TOEFL iBT Australia must be taken at an authorised test centre (Home Edition scores are currently not accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs).

Source ↗

Study in the UK

TOEFL is not on the UK Home Office's SELT list. For Student visas at degree level and above, the university (Higher Education Provider) may assess English proficiency itself (equivalent to B2), so it may accept TOEFL; other visa routes with an English requirement must use a SELT (e.g. IELTS for UKVI). Check with each university.

Domestic admissions and scholarship applications

Many Vietnamese universities use international English certificates for admission; rules are published by each university. IIG Vietnam is the partner authorised by the Ministry of Education and Training to administer the TOEFL iBT (Decision 3176/QĐ-BGDĐT of 13 Oct 2023 and subsequent decisions).

Exam structure

SectionNumber of questionsTimeNotes
Stage 1 (router)All test takers take this stage; the result determines stage 2.—18–21 minutes (per the 2026 Test Blueprint)—
Stage 2 (lower or upper module)The difficulty matches the ability shown in stage 1. Scores are based on the number of correct answers in both stages AND question difficulty (IRT equating).—about 9 minutes—
Reading section totalEach question is worth at most 1 raw point; raw thresholds are converted to the 1–6 scale.50 (including unscored trial questions)~30 minutes1/4 of the overall score (overall score = average of the 4 sections)

On computer, 2-stage adaptive: the first stage (router) is the same for everyone, and its result determines whether the second stage is easier or harder. You cannot go back to the previous stage. Multiple-choice/fill-in questions, machine-scored.

Question types

  • Complete the Words30 (theo Blueprint) questions · 1 point/question, machine-scoredAn academic paragraph of about 70–100 words; the first sentence is intact, then in every other word the second half is missing — test takers fill in the missing letters. Each paragraph has 10 words to complete. Tests vocabulary, grammar and morphology.
  • Read in Daily Life5–15 questions · 1 point/question, machine-scoredEveryday texts of about 15–150 words (notices, ads, menus, emails, text message chains, social media posts, schedules, receipts…), each with 2–3 multiple-choice questions: purpose, details, inference, informal language.
  • Read an Academic Passage5–15 questions · 1 point/question, machine-scoredAn academic passage of about 200 words (history, art, economics, life/physical sciences, social sciences), 5 questions: main idea, details, vocabulary in context, inference, relationships between ideas, purpose of the passage. No background knowledge required.

How it is scored

  • Machine-scored against the answer key, 1 raw point per question.
  • Raw scores from both stages are placed on a common scale using IRT true-score equating, so whether you get an easier or harder stage 2, the conversion is fair.
  • Scores reported on a 1–6 scale (0.5 increments); 6 = C2, 5–5.5 = C1, 4–4.5 = B2, 3–3.5 = B1.
Recent changes
  • 21 Jan 2026: all old task types (long academic passages) replaced by Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage; switched to 2-stage adaptive.
  • 26 Jul 2023: the Reading section was shortened, and all unscored questions were removed from the test.
