Writing a summary in your own words
Three things a summary must do
- Cover the points asked for — not every point in the text, only those the question names.
- Use your own words — change the vocabulary and the sentence shape, not just the word order.
- Stay inside the word limit — usually 80–120 words, written as continuous prose.
How to keep the meaning while changing the words
The initiative reduced food waste considerably.
- Weak (word order only): Considerably, food waste was reduced by the initiative.
- Good (new words, new shape): The project cut the amount of food thrown away by a large margin.
Keep the connectives
Words such as because, although, so and however carry the logic. A summary that lists facts without them scores lower, because the reader can no longer tell what caused what.
Rainfall rose but the reservoir stayed low because of leaks. Dropping ‘because of leaks’ removes the whole explanation.

Giữ lại từ nối
because, although, so, however là chỗ chứa logic. Bài tóm tắt chỉ liệt kê dữ kiện mà bỏ chúng thì bị trừ, vì người đọc không còn biết cái gì gây ra cái gì.

Bài dưới đây dài 46 từ, giới hạn là 35. Cắt xuống mà không mất ý nào.
The new bus service, which started last year, costs less to operate and is also cheaper to run. It connects four villages that previously had no service at all, and because of this, more people are now able to reach the hospital in town.
Bước 1 — tìm ý trùng. ‘costs less to operate’ và ‘cheaper to run’ là một ý nói hai lần. Giữ một.
Bước 2 — nén cụm thành từ. ‘which started last year’ → ‘new’ đã hàm ý; ‘that previously had no service at all’ → ‘previously unserved’.
Bước 3 — giữ từ nối. ‘because of this’ mang quan hệ nhân quả, phải giữ dưới dạng nào đó (‘so’).
Bản rút gọn, 33 từ: The new bus service is cheaper to run and links four previously unserved villages, so more people can now reach the hospital in town. Ý nào cũng còn, chỉ mất phần lặp và phần trang trí.
Bẫy: cắt bằng cách bỏ ý cuối. Khi quá số từ, phản xạ sai là xoá hai câu cuối cho vừa — nhưng điểm nội dung chấm theo số ý nêu được, nên xoá ý là mất điểm chắc chắn, còn nén chữ thì không mất gì. Luôn cắt phần lặp và phần trang trí trước.
