| Conclusion | Bỏ học vẹt vô nghĩa và dạy cách tư duy, nhưng ghi nhớ và kỹ năng là hai mục tiêu bổ trợ; trí nhớ đầy đủ mới biến thông tin tra được thành hiểu biết. |
Because facts can now be found online in seconds, some argue that schools should abandon memorisation in favour of skills such as problem-solving, while others insist that memorising knowledge remains essential. Although I accept that rote learning for its own sake is wasteful, I side with the second view, because thinking skills cannot operate in a vacuum.
Those who favour a skills-based curriculum point out that much of what students memorise is quickly forgotten and rarely needed. The date of a battle or the capital of a distant country can be found instantly, so hours spent drilling such facts seem a poor use of class time. Employers, they add, increasingly value the ability to analyse unfamiliar problems and evaluate sources, none of which is measured by recall-based examinations. Memorisation also rewards students with quiet homes and time to revise, whereas skills can be practised in class. Finland has largely replaced fact tests with open-ended projects, yet its results remain among Europe's strongest.
However, the opposing view rests on a firmer understanding of how thinking works. Critical thinking is not a free-floating ability: a person can only reason about a topic if relevant knowledge is already in their head. A student who has to look up every term in a scientific article will lose the thread of the argument long before they can evaluate it. Memorised knowledge also speeds up new learning, since each fact provides a hook for the next. Search engines and AI tools, moreover, only help those who know enough to ask the right question and spot a confident wrong answer.
In conclusion, schools should prune pointless rote learning and teach students how to think, but memory and skills are complementary rather than competing goals: a well-stocked mind is what turns information found online into understanding.
