From factory workers who return home once a year to executives who live out of a suitcase, a growing number of people see their relatives mainly on a screen. The causes are largely economic, and the effects, both on those who leave and on the households they leave behind, will be mixed: more money, but weaker bonds.
The underlying cause is that work and study are concentrated in places where families do not live. Well-paid jobs gather in large cities and richer countries, so people from rural areas migrate in search of work, often leaving children with grandparents because city housing and schooling are beyond their means. Vietnamese workers on contracts in Japan or South Korea commonly spend three years or more abroad with barely a visit home. Even within one country, long shifts, lengthy commutes and frequent business travel can remove a parent from family life almost as completely. Cheap flights and video calls, meanwhile, make such arrangements seem tolerable.
The consequences will differ for the two sides. The absent workers gain higher earnings and broader experience, but many will pay with loneliness and exhaustion, and after years away they may return to find themselves strangers in their own homes. For their families, regular remittances will pay for better houses, schooling and medical care. Money, however, cannot replace presence. Children raised without a parent's daily guidance may struggle at school, elderly relatives will have income but no one to look after them, and marriages sustained only by phone calls will be placed under severe strain. Over time, the missed family milestones, from first steps to funerals, will create a distance that a later reunion cannot fully close.
In conclusion, people are spending longer away from home because opportunity lies elsewhere and technology softens the separation. They and their relatives will be materially better off, yet both are likely to pay a heavy emotional price for it.
