Science has explained much of how the world works, yet people still queue for concerts, fill galleries and read novels. The reason, I believe, is that the arts tell us two things that lie beyond the reach of science: what life feels like from the inside, and what makes it worth living.
Science describes experience from the outside, in terms that are true for everyone; art conveys what it is like for one person. Statistics can tell us how many soldiers died in a war, but it takes a novel such as Bao Ninh's 'The Sorrow of War' to make a reader feel the guilt of a man who survived when his friends did not. Painting works similarly: Picasso's 'Guernica' contains no figures about the bombing of a town, yet few who have stood before it forget the terror it shows. Music goes further still, expressing grief or joy that words cannot capture. By letting us inhabit another person's experience, the arts evoke empathy in a way that data rarely can.
The arts also deal with questions of value, which science is not designed to answer. Research can tell us how to edit a gene or build an intelligent machine, but not whether we ought to. It is fiction that has explored such moral dilemmas most memorably, from 'Frankenstein' onwards. More broadly, stories, songs and plays ask what a good life consists of and what we owe one another, questions that have no experimental answer. They also preserve a community's memory: folk songs and traditional paintings record how ordinary people of an era loved, worked and mourned, which no archive of measurements could reconstruct.
Science, then, gives us reliable knowledge of facts, while the arts offer insight into the human condition. We continue to value artists because knowing how life works has never been the same as understanding how to live it.
