| Body 2 (Câu 2: tích cực hay tiêu cực) | P: nhìn chung có lợi cho cả cá nhân lẫn xã hội · Ex: doanh nghiệp mới, phát minh y học, kỷ lục thể thao đều bắt đầu từ người không chịu bằng lòng · Hai điều kiện thành xấu: mục tiêu chỉ là địa vị → gian lận, cướp công; không có giới hạn → hy sinh sức khoẻ, gia đình, kiệt sức · I: quyết định không phải ở độ mạnh mà ở đích nhắm và cách đạt. |
Ambition has an uneasy reputation: we admire it in a young entrepreneur and distrust it in a colleague. In my view it is close to indispensable for anyone seeking success, though never sufficient alone, and it is a positive trait as long as it is directed at achievement rather than at defeating other people.
For those who want to succeed, ambition matters because it supplies both direction and stamina. A person with a definite aim, whether to qualify as a surgeon or to open a restaurant, knows what to study and what to refuse, while someone equally able but content with the present tends to drift from job to job. Ambition also explains persistence: almost every career includes a failed examination or a rejected application, and it is the determined who try again after a setback. Nevertheless, desire is only the engine. Without skill and discipline it remains wishful thinking, as with the employee who dreams of becoming a director but will not attend a training course.
As a characteristic, ambition is beneficial, to society as well as to the individual. New businesses, medical discoveries and sporting records all begin with someone who refused to settle for what already existed, and the jobs and knowledge they create benefit everybody. The quality turns harmful under two conditions. When the goal is status alone, people may cheat or claim credit for a colleague's work, succeeding at others' expense; when it knows no limit, they sacrifice health and family and end in burnout. What decides the matter is therefore not how strong the ambition is, but what it aims at and what the person is prepared to do to get there.
Ambition is a necessary ingredient of success, although it achieves nothing without ability and effort. I regard it as a positive quality, one that becomes a vice only when it is cut loose from conscience.
