Two generations ago, a teenager who wanted to plant rice, repair a roof or cook a festive meal had to ask someone older. That is no longer true, which goes a long way towards explaining why young and old now spend so little time together; fortunately, the distance can be narrowed.

Three changes lie behind the decline. The first is physical separation: the multi-generational household has given way to the nuclear family, and young adults move to cities while their grandparents remain in the countryside. The second is that the direction of knowledge has reversed. The skills young people need now come from schools and the internet, so the experience of the elderly, once the source of their authority, can seem out of date. The third is that leisure has moved online, onto platforms most older people do not use, which leaves the two groups with little common ground even when they sit in the same room.

Since no policy can bring back the village household, solutions must create new reasons and places to meet. School projects in which pupils interview elderly residents about local history present older people as holders of knowledge found nowhere online. Shared activities can also rebuild common ground: at community centres, teenagers can teach pensioners to make video calls and learn recipes or crafts in return, so that knowledge flows in both directions. Housing arrangements can help too: Singapore subsidises people who buy a flat with or near their parents, and one Dutch care home lets students live rent-free in exchange for spending time with residents. Such schemes make contact an everyday routine rather than an occasional duty.

The generations have drifted apart because they no longer share a home, a set of useful skills or a form of entertainment. The remedy is not to lecture the young about respect but to redesign schools, neighbourhoods and housing so that meeting becomes worthwhile for both sides.

Cụm 'as often as they used to' đòi nguyên nhân phải là những THAY ĐỔI so với trước, nên mỗi nguyên nhân trong Body 1 đều có vế 'trước kia – bây giờ'. Ba giải pháp ở Body 2 đáp đúng ba nguyên nhân đó; giải pháp không nối với nguyên nhân nào là lỗi mạch lạc hay gặp nhất ở dạng Problem–Solution.
