| Body 1 (Tích cực) | Lợi ích số một là thời gian: giặt tay, canh nồi trên bếp, đi chợ mỗi ngày vì không có tủ lạnh từng ngốn nhiều giờ, hầu hết do phụ nữ gánh · Nồi cơm điện không cần canh, lò vi sóng hâm trong vài phút → phụ nữ đi làm, đi học · Hãng cạnh tranh nên giá hạ, nhà thu nhập thấp cũng mua được · TV đem tin tức, bài học, giải trí tới nhà không đủ tiền vé xem phim. |
| Body 2 (Tiêu cực + cân lại) | Vấn đề nằm ở việc thay đồ quá thường xuyên: thay rẻ hơn sửa → thói vứt bỏ, rác điện tử chứa kim loại độc · Quảng cáo và trả góp dụ mua thứ ít dùng (máy làm bánh mì nằm trong tủ), có nhà mắc nợ · Tốn điện hơn · Cân lại: giảm được bằng bảo hành dài, dịch vụ sửa chữa, nhãn năng lượng; còn số giờ lao lực được xoá bỏ thì với gia đình bình thường không cách nào khác thay được. |
A rice cooker or a washing machine seems too ordinary to deserve an essay, yet few inventions have changed daily life as much. That such household goods are now widely available is, in my view, an overwhelmingly positive development, although the way they are made and discarded creates real problems.
The chief benefit is time. Washing clothes by hand, watching a pot on the stove and shopping daily for want of a fridge used to consume hours of every day, and that labour fell almost entirely on women. Appliances have handed those hours back: a rice cooker needs no supervision and a microwave reheats a meal in minutes, freeing many women to take paid jobs or continue their education. Competition between manufacturers has pushed prices down until even low-income households can afford the basics. A television, meanwhile, brings news, lessons and entertainment to families who could never afford cinema tickets or private tuition. In effect, comforts once reserved for the wealthy have become ordinary.
The drawbacks arise less from owning these goods than from replacing them too often. Many appliances are now cheaper to replace than to repair, which encourages a throwaway mentality and produces mountains of electronic waste containing toxic metals. Aggressive advertising and instalment plans also tempt families to buy gadgets they hardly use, such as a bread maker that ends up in a cupboard, and some fall into debt. More devices mean higher electricity consumption as well. These are real costs, but they can be reduced through longer warranties, repair services and energy labels, whereas the hours of drudgery that appliances eliminated could not have been saved for ordinary families in any other way.
Overall, the wide availability of household goods is a positive development because it has freed people's time and narrowed the comfort gap between rich and poor. Its drawbacks stem from consumption habits and product design, and can be tackled without restricting choice.
