Two generations ago, most people found a job, a home and their friends in one city and kept them for life; today many have lived in three or four cities before the age of forty. This shift is driven chiefly by the way work is now organised, and although it carries real social costs, I consider it a broadly positive development.

The main cause is that neither education nor employment is local any longer. Young people leave home for university, move again for a first job, and then relocate for work whenever a better offer appears, now that a job for life has largely disappeared. Specialised industries also cluster in particular cities: a software engineer or a film editor may find suitable positions in only two or three places. Housing is a further factor. As prices in major centres rise, families who cannot afford to buy are pushed to cheaper cities, and remote working makes such moves easier.

In my view, the benefits of this mobility outweigh its drawbacks. People who are free to move can match their skills to the place that values them most, which raises both their income and national productivity. Living in several cities also broadens people's horizons, forcing them to adapt to new colleagues, customs and even dialects. The price is paid mainly in relationships. Those who move repeatedly seldom put down roots, so they know their neighbours less well, their children must change schools, and ageing parents may be left hundreds of kilometres away. These are serious losses, yet they can be softened by video calls and affordable transport, whereas being tied to a single city with few opportunities is a constraint that nothing can soften.

To sum up, people change cities because study, careers and housing costs now demand it. Despite the strain this places on family and community ties, the wider choices it gives individuals make it a change for the better.
