Supermarkets that close at midnight and shopping centres that trade seven days a week have become normal in many countries. In my view, this change is mostly good news for shoppers, but its effects on the surrounding community are, on balance, negative.

For customers, the chief benefit of extended opening hours is flexibility. Nurses and factory staff who work shifts, as well as office employees who finish at six, can buy what they need late in the evening or on a Sunday instead of rushing during a lunch break. Because customers are spread over more hours, queues are also shorter. There is a cost, however. When shops never close, browsing becomes a default leisure activity, which encourages impulse buying and takes up evenings that families might have spent together. Even so, shoppers remain free to stay at home, so for them the advantages clearly dominate.

The community has less choice in the matter. Longer hours do create part-time jobs, often suited to students, and streets that are lit and busy after dark tend to feel safer. Yet those who fill these jobs must work unsocial hours, away from their own families. Nearby residents put up with delivery lorries and noise late into the night. Most damaging in the long run is the effect on small independent retailers: total spending hardly grows simply because doors stay open longer, so the extra hours merely redistribute customers towards large chains that can afford to staff them. A family-run shop must either exhaust its owners or lose trade, and when it closes the neighbourhood loses part of its character.

Longer opening hours thus make life noticeably easier for people as consumers, while imposing real costs on them as employees, neighbours and local business owners. Since most of the convenience could be achieved with more modest extensions, I regard the overall impact on communities as more harmful than beneficial.
