| Introduction | Tả hiện tượng bằng hình ảnh: giảng đường lý, hoá, sinh vắng dần trong khi lập trình, dữ liệu, thiết kế số quá tải.
Lecture halls for physics, chemistry and biology are emptying while courses in programming, data and digital design are oversubscribed. This shift has understandable causes, but I regard it as a negative development in the long run, because computing is a tool whose value depends on the sciences it is applied to.
The principal reason is the labour market. Software companies recruit in large numbers, pay generous starting salaries and allow remote work, and a student can become employable after a three-year degree or even a short coding course. A career in the pure sciences looks very different: a chemistry or biology graduate usually needs a master's degree or doctorate before finding research work, and then faces short contracts and modest pay. School experience reinforces the choice. Teenagers see immediate results when they build an app, whereas laboratory science demands years of abstract theory, and many schools lack the equipment to bring the subject to life.
In the short term the trend serves both students and the digital economy. Over time, however, I believe it will prove harmful. The greatest challenges societies face, among them new diseases, clean energy and food security, are problems of matter and living organisms, and they cannot be solved by code alone. Software may help to design a vaccine or a battery, but only chemists and biologists can decide what to model, make the product and test whether it works. A country that trains too few of them will have to import its expertise or go without. Students themselves are also at risk: when everyone crowds into the same field, salaries lose their premium.
In sum, students are abandoning science for computing because the job market sends them a rational signal, yet the wider consequences are damaging. Governments should redress the balance with scholarships and better-paid research posts, and programming should be taught as a skill within the sciences rather than a replacement for them.
