| Body 2 (Chỗ yếu của chữ 'everyone') | P: quy tắc cứng lộ điểm yếu · E: em không hợp học chữ bị ép ngồi lớp → chán, trốn học, quậy · E2: các em không kém, chỉ học tốt hơn bằng tay → đổi nội dung học chứ không thả các em · Ex: mô hình kép của Đức (vừa ở doanh nghiệp vừa ở trường nghề); Anh buộc học hoặc đào tạo tới 18, tính cả học việc. |
| Conclusion | Đồng ý không ai nên dừng học trước 18 vì cái giá bỏ học sớm cao và dồn lên nhóm thiệt thòi; chỉ phản đối việc hiểu đó là hai năm ngồi bàn — cần một lối đi nghề nghiệp đáng tin song song. |
Should a sixteen-year-old be free to walk out of education for good? I believe not, and I support keeping all young people in learning until eighteen, provided that 'school' is understood broadly enough to include vocational colleges and apprenticeships.
The principal reason for raising the leaving age is that the labour market has little to offer those who leave early. Jobs that once required only a strong back now demand literacy, numeracy and computer skills, so teenagers who drop out early tend to drift into low-paid, insecure work. Sixteen-year-olds are also too young for so consequential a choice, since few adolescents can foresee what they will want at thirty. Two further years give them time to mature, and for children from poorer families, who are likeliest to leave, staying on is often the only route to a better income than their parents had.
The word 'everyone', however, exposes the weakness of a rigid rule. Not all teenagers are academically inclined, and forcing a restless seventeen-year-old through literature and algebra produces boredom, truancy and disruption for classmates who want to learn. Such students are not incapable; they learn better with their hands, and the solution is to change what they study, not to release them. Germany's dual system, in which trainees divide their week between a company and a vocational school, shows that hands-on training can lead to respected, well-paid careers. England takes a similar line by requiring young people to remain in education or training until eighteen, so an apprenticeship counts.
To sum up, I agree that nobody should finish their education before eighteen, because the cost of leaving early is high and falls hardest on the disadvantaged. I disagree only with the assumption that this means two more years at a desk. A system offering a credible vocational route alongside the academic one would make the rule both fair and workable.
