Marketers love to sort consumers into generations, as if a date of birth could predict the contents of a shopping basket. I disagree that age is the strongest influence on how people shop: it shapes the manner of buying, but income decides most of what is actually bought.
Age certainly leaves a visible mark. Shoppers in their twenties tend to buy through their phones, discover products on TikTok and devote much of their income to fashion and gadgets, and many are prone to impulse buying when a trend takes off. Their grandparents are more likely to visit a familiar market or shop, handle goods before buying and show strong brand loyalty to names they have long trusted. Priorities shift with each stage of life too, from clothes and entertainment in youth to children's needs in middle age and health products later. If shopping habits meant only where and how people buy, the statement would be hard to dispute.
What people buy, and how much, is dictated by disposable income. A student and a company director of the same age live in different commercial worlds: one compares prices and waits for discounts, while the other pays for convenience without glancing at the price tag. Conversely, a wealthy thirty-year-old and a wealthy sixty-year-old often choose the same restaurants, airlines and car showrooms, because purchasing power sorts consumers more firmly than year of birth. Even the age patterns above are partly income in disguise, since the young hunt for bargains online largely because they earn less. Location matters too: a rural pensioner with no delivery service cannot shop as a city-dweller of the same age does, whatever their preferences.
In my view, then, age is a real but secondary influence. It explains the channel a shopper uses and the trends they notice, yet the household budget sets the limits within which every such choice is made, which makes income the more powerful factor.
