Anyone curious about daily life elsewhere in the world can either watch it or read about it. I agree that film is the better way to grasp what a way of life looks and sounds like, but not that it is the better source overall, since much of what governs how people live is invisible to a camera.
Film's great strength is that it shows where a book can only describe. In a few minutes of documentary footage, a viewer takes in the layout of a house, the way a meal is shared and the tone in which people address their elders, details that would occupy pages of prose and still be imagined wrongly. A half-hour programme about the floating markets of the Mekong Delta conveys the noise and the pace of trading more faithfully than any chapter could. Video also reaches people who would never open an academic book, and brings a culture to life for a wider audience. As a first impression, little can rival it.
What the camera cannot do is explain. The reasons behind what we see, such as inheritance rules, religious beliefs, household debts or the history of a region, leave no visual trace; a narrator can mention them, but only a written account has room to set them out properly. Film is also less neutral than it seems. Directors select the most picturesque or shocking moments, and people tend to behave differently on camera, so the result is often a selectively edited picture presented as fact. A careful written study, by contrast, supplies the historical and social context and the figures, and can be checked against other accounts.
Overall, my agreement is partial: film is the better medium for seeing how others live, written documents for understanding why. Someone who relies on video alone risks a superficial understanding, so the sensible approach is to start with the screen and then turn to the page.
