It is easy to assume that smartphones and fast internet have improved life for everyone. The statement rejects that assumption, and I partly agree: the gains have been shared very unequally, but it is an exaggeration to say that anyone gains nothing at all.

There is no doubt that some groups have reaped far greater benefits than others. Educated city dwellers with office jobs can now work from home through video calls and move money in seconds. Small traders have gained too, since a single phone lets a clothes seller in a provincial town reach customers across the country without renting a shop. What these people share is a reliable connection, a decent device and the skills to use both. Those who lack any one of the three, such as the elderly, the very poor and residents of remote areas, find themselves on the wrong side of the digital divide.

Even so, to claim that such people do not benefit 'at all' ignores how technology reaches them at second hand. A grandmother who has never touched a keyboard still sees her grandchildren when a relative holds up a phone for a video call. A villager without internet access is nonetheless helped when a neighbour can summon an ambulance in minutes. The real grievance of digitally excluded groups is different: as banks, ticket offices and government services move online, those who cannot follow sometimes receive a worse service than before. That is a serious problem, but it is one of unequal access, not of a technology that offers them nothing.

Overall, modern communications have rewarded the urban and tech-savvy most generously, while others have received only indirect benefits and some new inconveniences. The claim that some people gain nothing is therefore too absolute to be true, but the inequality is real, and the sensible response is to narrow the gap through cheaper access and basic training.

reaped far greater benefitsgặt hái lợi ích lớn hơn hẳn
the digital dividekhoảng cách số
at second handmột cách gián tiếp, qua người khác

the urban and tech-savvyngười thành thị, rành công nghệ
narrow the gapthu hẹp khoảng cách
Cụm quyết định là 'at all'.
