| Body 1 (Nhượng bộ: vai trò của may mắn) | P: may rủi định điều kiện xuất phát · E: không ai chọn gia đình, đất nước, sức khoẻ · Ex: hai học sinh giỏi ngang nhau, một em có bố mẹ lo học phí, một em phải nghỉ học đi làm · I: ở đỉnh cao (ca sĩ nổi tiếng, tỉ phú) thì 'đúng nơi đúng lúc' quả là phần lớn. |
It is sometimes claimed that reaching one's goals depends chiefly on good fortune. I disagree: luck decides where people start and occasionally hands out a spectacular prize, but for the goals most of us set, what we do repeatedly matters more than what happens to us once.
Chance undeniably shapes the conditions under which anyone strives. Nobody chooses to be born into a wealthy family, to grow up in a peaceful country or to be healthy, yet these factors beyond our control determine how steep the climb will be. Two equally able teenagers may end up in different places because one's parents could pay university fees while the other had to leave school and work. Luck is even more visible at the top, where being in the right place at the right time often separates the famous singer or billionaire founder from hundreds of equally talented rivals. For anyone aiming at global stardom, fortune probably is the larger part.
Most ambitions, however, are not of that kind. Passing a professional exam, mastering a foreign language or running a marathon are goals that ordinary people achieve, and the route to them is well known: sustained, deliberate effort. Crucially, effort also changes how much luck matters. Someone who applies for one job is at the mercy of chance, whereas someone who applies for fifty, improving after each rejection, has turned a gamble into something close to a safe bet. Good fortune itself works the same way, since an unexpected vacancy is worthless to someone without the skills to seize the opportunity.
I therefore do not accept that achievement is mostly a matter of luck. Fortune deals the opening hand and settles the rare contests that only one person can win. Everywhere else, which is where most human aims lie, those who keep working and recover from setbacks succeed more often than those who wait for a lucky break.
