| Introduction | Nêu xu hướng + trả lời thẳng: thừa nhận chi phí tài chính và tinh thần, nhưng lợi ích học thuật, ngôn ngữ, cá nhân nặng hơn. |
| Body 1 | Lợi ích: tiếp cận thứ trong nước chưa có (phòng thí nghiệm, người hướng dẫn) → bằng cấp được quốc tế công nhận · đắm mình trong ngoại ngữ ngoài lớp học · tự lập vì tự lo ngân sách, visa, nhà cửa → thứ nhà tuyển dụng khó dạy. |
The number of students enrolling at foreign universities has grown markedly in recent decades, and the decision is rarely cheap or easy. Although the financial and emotional costs are real, I believe they are clearly outweighed by the academic, linguistic and personal gains of a degree abroad.
The strongest argument for going abroad is access to something the home country cannot yet offer. A Vietnamese student of biomedical engineering may find laboratories and research supervisors in Australia or Germany that have no equivalent at home, and the resulting internationally recognised qualification opens doors with multinational employers. Language is a second gain: someone who must argue in seminars and negotiate a tenancy in English is immersed in the language in a way no classroom can reproduce. Most lasting of all is the independence that comes from managing a budget, a visa and a household alone, far from home. Graduates return not only better trained but better at handling unfamiliar situations, which is precisely what employers find hard to teach.
None of this comes free. Tuition and living costs in cities such as Sydney or London can consume a family's savings, and long hours of part-time work often damage grades. Loneliness and culture shock are equally common in the first year, when relatives are several time zones away. These drawbacks, however, are largely temporary or manageable: homesickness usually fades once friendships form, while scholarships and cheaper destinations ease the financial burden. The cost becomes decisive only when the course abroad is no better than one available at home, in which case the family is paying for prestige and not for education.
On balance, the benefits of studying overseas outweigh the drawbacks, because the gains in expertise, language and self-reliance last a whole career while most of the difficulties do not. Provided the chosen course is superior to the local alternative, the investment is likely to repay itself over a working life.
