| Introduction | Nêu xu hướng cha mẹ tự dạy con ở nhà + trả lời ngay câu 'outweigh': lợi ích có thật nhưng bị lấn át bởi cái trẻ mất về học thuật và xã hội. |
Home education, once a rarity, has become a deliberate choice for a growing number of families. Although teaching a child at the kitchen table offers real benefits, I believe these are outweighed by what the child stands to lose, both academically and socially.
The appeal of home-schooling lies in its flexibility. A parent teaching one child can tailor lessons to the child's pace, lingering over fractions for a fortnight or racing ahead in reading, whereas a teacher facing thirty pupils must aim at the middle. Gaps in understanding are noticed at once rather than at the end-of-term test. For some children this is not a luxury but a necessity. Those who have been bullied, who are chronically ill, or who train seriously as musicians or athletes may learn far more at home than in a classroom they dread.
These gains, however, depend on a condition that few households can meet. Up to the age of ten or so, a patient and well-educated parent can cover the curriculum; beyond that, hardly anyone is equipped to teach chemistry, calculus and a foreign language alike to examination standard, and the child's education becomes only as good as the parent's weakest subject. School also teaches things that appear on no timetable. Sharing a room with people one did not choose, working in a group with someone irritating and being judged by an adult who is not one's own parent are rehearsals for adult life that a home cannot stage. Finally, one parent usually has to give up a career, which cuts family income and makes the arrangement the preserve of the better-off.
In short, home education serves a small minority of children well, but as a spreading trend its drawbacks weigh more heavily. Most parents cannot replace a team of specialist teachers, and none can replace classmates, so for the typical child school remains the better option.
