The given diagram depicts how pineapples are grown and then processed into a range of products.
Overall, the process comprises two main phases: a natural growing period followed by a man-made processing stage, which splits into three separate routes depending on the size of the fruit.
In terms of the first five stages, pineapple crowns are initially planted 26cm apart in a warm climate of 23–30°C. After seven months, the plants are sprayed with ethylene, after which they are left to grow for a further five months. At this point, the mature fruit, measuring 30cm in height and weighing 2kg, is harvested.
Turning to the remaining phases, the pineapples are washed and graded by size. Small fruit have their tops removed and are peeled before being fed into an extractor to produce juice. Medium-sized pineapples undergo the same initial steps, but are subsequently cored and sliced and then canned. Meanwhile, the largest fruit are coated in wax so as to preserve them, packed into wooden crates and ultimately exported by ship.
