The given diagram illustrates the step-by-step procedure by which aluminium cans are recycled.
Overall, this is a cyclical, man-made process consisting of seven stages, commencing with the disposal of used cans and culminating in new cans being reused, at which point the cycle begins anew. It is also worth noting that 74% of all aluminium cans in the UK are recycled.
In terms of the first three stages, used cans are initially placed in special recycling bins, from which they are collected by lorry and taken to a recycling plant. There, they undergo four treatments in quick succession: they are cleaned, sorted and shredded, before being compressed into dense blocks.
Turning to the remaining phases, the compressed aluminium is heated to a high temperature until it melts. Following this, the molten metal is rolled into flat sheets between 2.5mm and 6mm thick. In the penultimate stage, these sheets are recycled into brand-new cans, which closely resemble the originals. Finally, the new cans are put back into circulation and reused by consumers, after which they are discarded into recycling bins once again and the whole cycle repeats itself.
