The given map illustrates how the village of Chorleywood, near London, expanded between 1868 and 1994.
Overall, Chorleywood underwent a dramatic transformation, especially in terms of its size and its transport links, with housing spreading steadily outwards along the main road, the railway and later the motorway, while the park and golf course remained intact.
In terms of the first three periods, the village was originally a small settlement located just north of what later became Chorleywood Station, between 1868 and 1883. Following the construction of the railway in 1909, housing spread southwards along the main road between 1883 and 1922. From 1922 to 1970, the most extensive growth took place, with a large area developed to the west of the main road and a further block built south of the railway, east of the station.
Turning to the final period, from 1970 to 1994, after a motorway was constructed in the east in 1970, five new residential areas sprang up around it. Two of these were situated near the roundabout in the north-east, while the remaining three clustered around the point where the motorway crosses the railway.
