The table records the percentage of adults in a particular country who took part in each of seven sports at least once a month in 1999, 2004 and 2009.
Overall, walking was far and away the most common activity in all three years. Participation grew in walking, cycling and gym or fitness sessions but shrank in swimming, golf and tennis, while football remained static.
Walking attracted 41.2% of adults in 1999, more than twice the share of any other sport, and extended its lead thereafter, reaching 46.9% by 2009. The fastest growth, however, was in gym and fitness, whose participation rate more than doubled from 7.5% to 16.1%. This lifted it from fourth place to second, as it passed cycling by 2004 and swimming by 2009. Cycling itself gained in popularity too, rising from 9.8% to 14.2%.
Swimming, the second most popular pursuit at the outset, slipped gradually from 17.4% to 15.3%. Golf and tennis, already minority sports, each lost 1.7 percentage points, falling to 3.9% and 2.6% respectively, which left tennis the least practised of the seven. Football barely changed, staying within 0.1 points of 7%; by 2009 its rate exceeded those of golf and tennis combined.
