The table compares Australia and Malaysia in 1980 and 2002 in terms of population size, the balance of the sexes, birth and growth rates, and age structure.
Overall, both populations grew, but Malaysia's expanded far more quickly and overtook Australia's. Malaysia also remained a much more youthful society, whereas Australia showed clear signs of an ageing population.
In 1980, Australia had 14.7 million inhabitants, slightly more than Malaysia's 13.8 million. By 2002, however, Malaysia's population had grown by about three quarters to 24.3 million, while Australia's had risen by exactly a third to 19.6 million. This contrast is mirrored in the birth rates: Malaysia's fell from 31.2 to 21.8 per 1,000 people, yet remained well above Australia's (15.3 and 12.7). Similarly, Malaysia's annual growth rate, at 2.4% and 2.1%, was roughly double that of Australia (1.2% and 1.1%) in both years.
The age profiles differed just as sharply. Under-15s made up 39.1% of Malaysians in 1980 and still 33.2% in 2002, compared with 25.3% and 20.4% of Australians. Conversely, the proportion of Australians aged 65 or over climbed from 9.6% to 12.6%, almost three times the Malaysian figure of 4.3%, which had barely risen from 3.6%. In both countries, men and women were almost evenly balanced, with neither sex ever accounting for more than 50.8%.
