| Introduction | Paraphrase: số dặm trung bình mỗi người ở England đi mỗi năm bằng tám hình thức di chuyển, năm 1977 và 2007, kèm dòng tổng. |
| Overview | Overall: người dân đi xa hơn hẳn, phần lớn mức tăng đến từ ô tô — phương tiện áp đảo ở cả hai năm; đa số hình thức khác cũng tăng, riêng đi bộ, xe đạp và xe buýt nội đô giảm. Không số liệu. |
| Body 1 | All modes 4,389 → 6,506 dặm (tăng 2,117, gần một nửa). Car 2,874 → 4,912 (tăng 2,038; tỉ trọng từ khoảng hai phần ba lên ba phần tư). Train 301 → 418; Long-distance coach 51 → 96; Taxi 12 → 47. |
| Body 2 | Local bus 437 → 281 (giảm hơn một phần ba, bị Train vượt); Walking 262 → 198 (giảm khoảng một phần tư); Bicycle 58 → 42, thấp hơn cả coach (96) và taxi (47) năm 2007. |
The table records how many miles the average person in England travelled each year by eight forms of transport in 1977 and 2007.
Overall, people came to travel considerably further, and the bulk of this growth came from the car, which dominated in both years. Most other modes also grew, but walking, cycling and local bus travel all declined.
Total distance per person rose from 4,389 to 6,506 miles, an increase of 2,117 miles, or nearly half. The car was almost solely responsible: it accounted for 2,038 of those miles, rising from 2,874 to 4,912 and lifting its share of the total from roughly two thirds to three quarters. Train travel rose from 301 to 418 miles, while long-distance coach journeys nearly doubled (51 to 96) and taxi use, though still negligible in absolute terms, almost quadrupled, from 12 to 47 miles.
Three forms of travel went against this trend. Local bus travel dropped by more than a third, from 437 to 281 miles, letting the train replace it as the second most used named mode. Walking declined by about a quarter, from 262 to 198 miles, and cycling, already marginal at 58 miles, fell to 42. By 2007, therefore, people travelled further by coach or even by taxi than by bicycle.
