The first diagram shows a cross-section of a solar panel, and the other two illustrate how it can heat a room or a household's water.
Overall, the panel is an insulated box that traps the sun's heat and transfers it to air or water passing through it. The same design serves two purposes, although heating water also requires a tank.
Structurally, the box has a transparent glass cover on top and a black metal plate along the bottom, separated by an air space. Sunlight passes through the glass and is absorbed by the plate. Cold air or water enters through an inlet low on one side, picks up this heat as it crosses the box, and leaves through an outlet positioned higher up on the opposite side.
For space heating, the panel is mounted on a sunny outside wall. Cool air is drawn from the room into the bottom of the panel and, once warmed, flows back in near the top. For water heating, the panel is tilted towards the sun and connected by pipes to a water tank set above it and fed by a cold water supply. Heated water rises to the top of the tank and is piped to the taps, while cold water from the bottom is returned to the panel.
