The maps illustrate how an Australian zoo has changed since 1960.
Overall, most of the original animal housing has been replaced or enlarged, with native wildlife and other new species introduced, and visitor facilities have been considerably expanded. The network of footpaths and the position of the entrance, however, are exactly as they were.
Along the northern edge, all three exhibits have changed. The lion cages in the north-west corner have made way for a larger big cat enclosure, the monkey house beside them now holds reptiles, and the elephant yard in the north-east has been turned into a koala sanctuary. In the middle of the site, the pond has been converted into a penguin pool, while the aviary to its west and the kangaroo paddock to its east remain in their original locations.
The southern strip next to Park Road is now devoted to visitors' needs. A children's playground occupies the site of the former picnic lawn in the south-west. West of the entrance path, the small ticket booth has been rebuilt as a combined ticket office and gift shop, and on the other side the kiosk has been upgraded to a restaurant. The car park in the south-east has been extended, and a bus stop has been installed on Park Road outside it.
