The two plans show a university's student common room as it is now and as it will look after refurbishment.
Overall, the room will be transformed from a largely recreational space into one that also caters for study. Most fixtures around the walls, and the entrance in the south wall, will stay where they are.
The most significant change will be in the centre, where the pool table is to be removed to make way for two round study tables, each seating four. To the east, only the northern of the two six-seater dining tables will be kept; the southern one will be replaced by computer desks with three chairs. Even so, the number of chairs will rise from twelve to seventeen. In the north-west corner, lockers are to take the place of the bookshelves.
Elsewhere, the kitchen area in the north-east corner will be extended westwards along the north wall, and a second, smaller sofa will be placed just south of the existing one, which faces the TV on the west wall. A new door in the east wall, close to the south-east corner, will give direct access to the garden. The window, the TV, the vending machines in the south-west corner and the noticeboard beside the entrance will remain in their current positions.
