The two plans show how the ground floor of a public library was laid out in 2001 and how it had been rearranged by 2009.
Overall, the library gave over less space to printed and recorded material and more to technology, study and socialising. The building itself, its southern entrance and a few areas in the west were left untouched.
Along the northern wall, adult fiction in the north-west remained in its original position, but the two rooms to its east changed. The newspapers and magazines area was converted into a computer area, and the reading room in the north-east became a café. In the centre, the issue desk was replaced with self-service machines, and an information desk was added just south of them, facing the entrance.
The eastern side changed most. In 2001 it housed CDs and videos and, in the south-east, children's books; by 2009 the former had been removed altogether, and the two spaces formed one larger children's area with a story corner. Opposite, non-fiction on the western wall made way for a study area which, with the computer area and the café, brought the number of areas with seating from one to three. Finally, in the south-west, the toilets remained where they were, whereas a lift was installed alongside the stairs.
