Maps — Felixstowe in 1967 and 2001

The two maps show how the coastal town of Felixstowe was laid out in 1967 and how it had changed by 2001.

Overall, land used for farming, fishing and boating was largely given over to leisure and tourist facilities, and the town's natural areas shrank. The basic layout, however, with the beach and pier south of the High Street, stayed the same.

North of the High Street, the farmland in the north-west had been converted into a golf course by 2001. The woodland to its east was halved in size, and tennis courts were built on the cleared ground at the eastern edge.

South of the road, change was more extensive. Of the four buildings lining the south side, the café and the hotel remained in place, but the shops at the western end made way for apartments and the fish market at the eastern end was replaced by a car park. Further south, the marina was removed, and a swimming pool and gardens were laid out on its former site, while three wind turbines were erected at the eastern end of the sand dunes, beside the new pool. Finally, the beach was divided at the pier into a public section to the west and a private one, belonging to the hotel, to the east.
