Maps — A coal mine before and after redevelopment

The two maps depict the layout of a coal-mining site when it was in operation and after redevelopment.

Overall, the site was transformed from a place of heavy industry into a leisure and heritage attraction with some housing. Every mining facility was replaced or given a new function, whereas the roads and the miners' cottages were left as they were.

Across the north and centre of the site, the railway line along the top edge was converted into a cycle path, and the coal loading depot below it in the north-east became a car park. The waste heap in the west was landscaped to create a country park with trees. Beside it, in the centre, the mine shaft gave way to a mining museum, while the coal storage yard to the east was redeveloped as new housing.

Further south, the buildings on either side of the access road were put to new uses. The mine offices on its western side became a visitor centre and café, and the workshops opposite were turned into smaller craft shops. The pond in the south-east was enlarged into a fishing lake, and a bus stop was added on the main road east of the junction. The miners' cottages in the south-west were the only buildings to survive unchanged.
