The line graph plots average snow depth, in centimetres, on the upper slopes (2,400 m) and lower slopes (1,500 m) of a ski resort from November to May in one winter season.
Overall, snow accumulated at both levels until late winter and then thinned. The upper slopes were more deeply covered in every month; their snow also peaked a month later and lasted longer.
On the upper slopes, the snow was 48 cm deep in November and doubled to 96 cm in December. It continued to build up through January (158 cm) and February (204 cm), reaching a peak of 221 cm in March. Depth fell to 173 cm in April and then more than halved to 82 cm in May, still well above the November level.
The lower slopes began with only 10 cm, roughly a fifth of the depth higher up. This rose to 47 cm in December and 92 cm in January before peaking at 118 cm in February, a month ahead of the upper slopes and at little more than half their eventual maximum. The snow cover then receded quickly, to 87 cm in March and 31 cm in April, and by May had disappeared altogether. The gap between the two levels was thus widest in April, at 142 cm.
