The line graph charts the growth in subscriptions to three telecommunications services in China, namely landline telephones, mobile phones and the internet, from 1994 to 2005.
Overall, all three services expanded enormously, with growth gathering pace around the turn of the millennium. Mobile phones grew fastest and displaced landlines as the most popular service, while the internet remained the smallest of the three throughout.
In 1994 there were 27 million landline subscribers, and this number rose without interruption, and increasingly quickly, to about 145 million in 2000 and 350 million in 2005, a thirteenfold increase. Mobile phones started from just 2 million and were still below 50 million in 1999, but they then took off: subscriptions roughly doubled to around 85 million in 2000 and grew by some 60 million a year thereafter. They moved ahead of landlines in 2003, at about 270 million against just over 260 million, and ended the period at 393 million, 43 million higher than their rival.
Internet service was virtually non-existent until 1997 and had fewer than 10 million subscribers in 1999. It subsequently grew year on year, passing 50 million in 2002 and reaching 111 million in 2005. Even so, this was less than a third of the figure for either type of telephone.
