The line graph shows daily oil consumption in the USA, Western Europe, China and the Middle East between 2009 and 2015, together with forecasts up to 2030.
Overall, consumption is projected to fall in the USA and Western Europe but to rise in China and the Middle East. China's growth is the most striking, and it is expected to replace the USA as the largest consumer of oil by the end of the period.
The USA used 18.8 million barrels a day in 2009, and this edged up to just over 19 million in 2015. Thereafter, demand is forecast to decline gradually to 16.4 million in 2030. Western Europe was already on a downward trend, falling from 14.6 million to around 13.6 million by 2015, and is predicted to drop further to 11.3 million by 2030.
China, by contrast, raised its consumption from 8.2 to roughly 11.4 million barrels by 2015. It is expected to overtake Western Europe shortly after 2018 and the USA in the late 2020s, finishing at 18.6 million, well over twice its 2009 level. The Middle East remains the smallest consumer throughout: its figure rose from 6.2 to about 7.4 million barrels by 2015 and is set to reach 9.3 million, which would be exactly half the projected Chinese total.
