The line graph shows what percentage of households in one country possessed each of five domestic appliances from 2001 to 2008.

Overall, ownership rose for four of the five appliances, most markedly for dishwashers, while separate freezers steadily lost ground. Washing machines were the most widely owned item throughout, present in almost every home.

Washing machines were already found in 92% of households in 2001, and this crept up to 96% by 2008. Microwave ovens narrowed the gap: starting at 70%, their figure climbed quickly to 80% in 2003 before levelling off at 87% in the last two years, nine percentage points behind washing machines rather than 22. Tumble dryers, owned by 52% of households at the outset, peaked at 58% in 2005 and 2006 and then slipped to 56%.

The other two appliances moved in opposite directions. Dishwashers were the least common item in 2001, at 23%, exactly half the figure for separate freezers (46%). However, dishwasher ownership grew every year, whereas the proportion of homes with a freezer fell continuously, to 38% in 2006. By then only two percentage points separated the pair, and the lines crossed during the following year. In 2008, dishwashers stood at 42% and freezers at 32%, a reversal of their original positions.
